making a hide

Hi all, Haven't been on here in a while...

My beautiful BP Jester has outgrown his favorite hides and I am having trouble finding him a new one.

At the moment he has one of those ceramic type flower pots with a hole in the side,, but he is far too big for it now and has trouble getting all of himself in and out... and then I just have a cardboard box which is likes some times.. but he prefers the flower pot.

So I have been looking for one that has a larger diameter but it still nice and low for him but not too low to squish him and I can't find one! The low pot bottoms I think are a bit too low, and I don't see the point of having a big high flower pot if they like small spaces to hide in.

I tried a piece of PVC but he won't go in it...

so.. any ideas? I like the ceramic pots because they help hold moisture.... And I don't want to go to a pet store and buy $30 for a hunck of hollowed out bark LOL.

What do you all use?

Thanks,

Nicole and Jester

hmmm.. his enclosure at the moment isn't quite big enough for that stuff....I hopefully will be getting a much larger one soon as he is getting cramped in the 20 gallon..

See if you can find plastic flower pot saucers -- they aren't too low at all!! Walmart has these plastic green ones here that come in all sizes, and they are really cheap too. They are also easy to cut holes into and since they are saucers, they are not too tall. They work well for all of my adults as well, in the largest size available.

I used to use only cardboard boxes until I found these. They are sooo cheap, easy to clean, and don't need to be replaced except for when they out grow them (and then you can just clean them up and give them to another snake).

I use little black plastic containers that came with that roast beef you heat up in the Microwave and it's done in like 10 mins, they work great. Only thing I fidn is that Fred sometimes pushes the thing around which I find really funny, he'll push it around to diffrent locations in the cage while he is still in it, I guess because he wants to be somewhere else, also he could easily fit all of himself inside but for some reason he allways likes to have some of him sticking out the back or the side. Anyway you can see the hide I use in the background of this picture....

Big fan of the cheapass plastic flowerpots you can easily carve an entrance into and clean. THe coconut fiber basket liners are pretty nice too.

i still like the teracotta pot bottom hides..... i find plastic ends up moving around too much and they can't really hide in it cuz it's too light....

walmart has the pot bottoms that are heavy up to really big sizes, they are like $12 but are huge and are still tall enough for a big ball python..... the biggest trick is to get a entrance smashed out that's the right size (i've been lucky!).....

other than that, dollerama baby! they have all sizes of rubbermaids & bowls that i use for hides and water dishes....

good luck!

If you have one in your area, raid the dollar tree. I found these little miniature clay fireplace looking things (looks like a big vase, but has a hole cut out in the side). They are made of ceramic also and i dig them for holding heat and moisture.

The dollar store tends to have lots of things that work well as snake hides, and when everythings a buck... it rules! I know what you mean about the 30$ log halves. Sometimes I think *I* should start making snake hides and selling them, considering the going prices!
