canadian breeder
Hey everyone,
unfortunately i just lost my painted to an URI and now have some space in my turtle tank. I was wondering if somebody could point me in the direction of a breeder or a source for turtles in canada? Both of mine were adopted, so i don't really know where to get them.
On a side note, it will be housed with a mississippi map, does anybody have a recommedation for a compatible species?
Thanks alot
Geoff

i don't want res and thats all that seems to be available. Also, they want $50 for me to adopt a turtle from a local place, when their enclosure is over crowded. That's my only problem with this unnamed place, that always bothered me. I could understand if they only had one or two and didn't want to give them up, but when there is easily 15 more turtles then there should be in the pond, They should be trying to get those turtles new homes no matter what. Definately not charging for them. Anyways, we'll see. I definately don't want a res though.

Wasn't there a guy in the classfieds that was trying to adopt out a Mud turtle a few weeks back?
I think people who adopt RES want the have the right people adopting them, and who will take care of them. But $50 is a heafty price tag, but I can understand their reasoning.
Cheers,
JJ
P.S. You want a RES K!LOS? I have a 9" female looking for a home.

$50 may be a little steep.. but.. considering whenever someone sees "FREE" adoption... everyone jumps at it on instinct.. then they dont want it the next day... as for putting a price tag on it.. it makes ppl think.. and the serious ones step forward.. even if the cost may be a little bit high.. :/

I recently took in two RES with plans to adopt them out after a couple months of good proper care. I thought about charging people for the same reason some of you qouted.....it can help weed out the people who are interested in getting a "Free pet"
It most certaintly cost me a good amount of money to care for the two RES, far more than 50 bucks a piece, and as I choose in the end not to charge, I got LOTS of emails from people who were under 15, people who could barely spell, people who wanted them for tropical fish tanks, etc all because the ad said "free to adopt"

In addition to helping weed out undesirable buyers with a higher price tag, you also have to take in to consideration the upkeep of a rescue. It costs a lot and they get virtually no support elsewhere.

these are all good points, but there are other ways to weed out the unfit keepers.
Why not just have a knowledge test? If you can pass the test, you know how to keep a turtle, and therefore are now eligible to adopt. Why wouldn't that work?
You're right, animal rescues can be quite costly. So why would you start the person willing to take on such a task $50 in the hole? See my point? that $50 could have covered a vet trip.
Thats just my 2 cents though

I am sorry but if you only have enough money to either pay for the rescue, OR a vet trip, but not both at any point should the need ever arise...then you really don't deserve the animal. And I try to weed out people who are unable financially as well but thats difficult without getting too personal.

The main idea of a fee for adoption is to help support the organization caring for the animal. This caring quite possibly has been going on for months before you adopt the turtle putting the rescue at a much greater loss than $50 . They will still have more animals there to take care of and it is not a fee but a required donation to ensure financial bonding to your charge. Why not donate an additional $50 just to feel good about helping the turtles you could not take home. Those are the ones in trouble.
