Perfectly normal. Some of my Ball pythons have gone 10+ meals before letting it all go. Some of them only go when they shed; it all depends. Ball pythons in general have very slllooooowww metabolisms. I would say he's fine.

Oh, and by the way, if your Ball python is 4.5 feet, it could probably be taking at least medium sized rats. Just FYI.

thanks for the help, i agree about the larger food, but both times i fed him he takes forever and ever to eat the rat. i dont think his last owners ever even fed him rats. the rats arn't very small though, about 4 or 5 inches nose to butt, he could still take something larger though, he just seems like he doesn't want to streeetttchh his mouth.

Not always true! My little female bp (that just started regularaly *sp?* eating rats ) takes absolutely FOREVER to get down a 3wk old rat, about a bit bigger than the size of a retired breeder mouse. It takes her a good 20 minutes-30 minutes. She has to "Kill" it first, then she might let go and slither away, so I have to dunk the HEAD in hot water (doesn't matter if the whole thing was wet anyways) THEN she will strike it, "Kill" it again, and procede to eat it.

It's almost like she expects the darned thing to walk down her throat.

i give mine FT and he doesn't even constrict it. all my other snakes constrict their food even though its always dead. he just smells it for a minute or two and then starts eating very very very slowly, takes him about a half hour to eat it.
i guess i'm use to my other snakes that gobble down their food as fast as possible.
