AZ Venomous Law

AZ Game and Fish: Reptile and Amphibian Regulations

Arizona Law is simple. In a nutshell, we are only allowed to have native species of venomous, being that they are collected legally per AZ Game and Fish Regulations, except for four (4) species of rattlesnakes (see below). We are allowed to have "mild" venomous snakes, such as Mangroves and False Water Cobras, mainly as these are not seen as 'true' venomous species. We are not allowed any Elapidae, except for our native species, the Arizona Coral Snake (M. e. euryxanthus.) as per state regulations. As said, the only Viperidae permitted are allowed native species. No Atractaspidae are allowed (Who keeps these much anyhow?). Venomous species under Colubridae that are not permitted are Dispholidus typus (Boomslangs), Thelotornis kirtlandii (Bird snake or Twig snake) and Rhabdophis (Keelbacks).

Our four (4) protected rattlesnake species are:

BANDED ROCK RATTLESNAKE - C. l. klauberi
TWIN-SPOTTED RATTLESNAKE - C. p. pricei
ARIZONA RIDGE-NOSED RATTLESNAKE - C. w. willardi
DESERT MASSASAGUA - S. c. edwardsii

The only person(s) exempt from these laws are those with permits. It is nearly next to impossible to get permitted unless your a zoological industry or the like. There is a small number of folks legally allowed to captively collect native Heloderma species, but this as well is through the AZ Game and Fish Department and only as an educational and conservational purpose. Heloderma are also protected by state law as the 4 named Crotalid species
