Mazuri Rodent 5001

I was wondering if this was a good feed for both mice and rats? I can't find it on the website.

It has 23% protien
4.5% fat
6% Fiber

I found it on the PMI website.
It's a basic lab diet.
Here's the link to all their lab diets. It's probably more expensive than Mazuri 6F
The Lab diets usually cost more. I've used 5015 for mice and am now using 5010. 5001 is similar but not autoclavable, which is fine for herper use
Here's the link, you can compare all the ingredients
http://www.labdiet.com/indexlabdiethome.htm

Just hit the "Rodent Diet" tab on the left side of the page and you'll get a description of each product

G U A R A N T E E D A N A L Y S I S
Crude protein not less than 23.0%

Crude fat not less than 4.5%

Crude fiber not more than 6.0%

Ash not more than 8.0%

Added minerals not more than 2.5%

I found that out! lol, the rats went nuts for it, fighting each other and such for a piece.

Do you think that the 5001 diet is good for breeder rodents? It was about 24$ for a 50lb bag. But considering they will each only eat like 2-5 blocks a piece (a day), and the mice eat like 1-3 blocks a piece (a day) then 50lbs should last a while.

And Purina Mills owns mazuri right?

what could I do to improve that for now? I'm not breeding right now, but plan on putting the males back in around june 18th-20th to start breeding again. Supplement them with something that has more fat in it?

I would definitely add more fat for the rats, I'm not sure about mice, I think they can do ok with lower fat levels. I don't know about the other details, but there may be a need for additional vitamins and/or minerals as well. If you aren't planning on breeding them for a while it should be fine on its own. It should be gone and you can find a new diet by the time you plan to put them together for breeding. You don't want to keep foods around for too long, they become stale and can lose their nutritional values. Warmer weather and/or humidity especially causes them to spoil quicker, and they may become moldy or otherwise unfit for consumption. :medpuke:

3 months may be pushing the envelope a bit on that one. I don't know how many rodents you have so I couldn't even give a guess as to how fast they will go through it all. I would recommend vacum sealing a good portion of it if you are only feeding a few animals. Freezing may be an option to consider, however it will alter some of the values of the food. I'm also not sure how well that type of thing freezes, and you might have to feed directly out of the freezer as well.

and unfourtunetly neither one of those are an option. No freezer space and no vaccum sealer

I have 6 rats and 3 mice, and I guess we could feed the pet rats some as well. (so that would be 8 rats and 3 mice)

Yeah definitly watch those types of foods. I am not sure about rodent diets spoiling but my Jack Russell doens't eat much. We used to buy the "big bag" of her dog food. She started puking and what not and it was because the food was going bad before she could get it finished off! I felt so bad. But now we just purchase 5 pounds at time. It's more annoying having to go out more often but its worth it because she is feeling better.

You could always open the bag, portion it out into smaller ziplock bags. At least that way the entire bag/stock of food isn't constantly being opened and reopened everyday at feeding. Even then though I am not sure how long it will last.

lol, wish I could, the entire bag is already opened and put into a rubbermaid. I don't even have the bag anymore.

It will be fine for several months as long as you keep it dry. I frequently store it for several months.
I bought three bags in late fall and I'm still working on the last one. Thats feeding a colony of 65-85 adults.
Let us know how yours is doing this time next year. LOL

Lol, well since we plan on aquiring more snakes once we get settled (as in getting jobs and finding out what monthly bills are) then I myself plan on getting a boa, which will mean more rodent production. lol

When I start breeding if I have this food still (which I assume I will) I will supplement them with other foods and just watch closely how they are doing.
