Glass tanks on their sides?

Well, I don't use glass tanks for my snakes normally, but I want my hogg island to be more on display. I was wondering if anybody had ever had any problems putting glass aquariums on their sides, with the screen lids at the front? With it on its side, it gives him more floor space, and I think looks a lot better. Also, keeps humidity and temperatures more steady. My only concern is the possibiliy of getting a draft. I don't have any open windows in the room or anything, just the wind created by walking past or opening/closing the door.

Has anybody had any luck with this?

Check out my gallery. My snake room is filled with tanks on their side. I've been keeping tanks stacked on their sides for two years now and I love it.

I have often thought of doing that for my BP.....how would you secure the screen lid so that she wont be able to push it...? Are there any recommendations for lids that work well this way? plus, is there a risk of her rubbing her face against the screen and getting scratched?

Good points Ashley. I'm pretty sure that my hogg wouldn't be strong enough (she's just a baby) to push the lid open. The bottom is secured with the two clips, and the top with the rotating lock thinger. For a BP, I'd be worried they'd be able to push the top corners enough that they could get pinched though. You could use bungee cords or luggage straps etc. likely to secure the lid.

I have use a set up with an identical lid to the one pictured and while it is better than a vertical set up I found that too much humidity was escaping for me to keep a BP this way. Since then I have covered the screen with a towel and that seems to do the trick for now, until I switch her into a rubbermaid. Of course doing that kinda kills any display qualities that there may have been.

If you have the size of lid that is 12" or so wide you can wreck a standard binder by seperating the 2 covers from the ringed part and then popping one of the covers into the frame, it's a perfect fit and the vinyl keeps the cardboard inside from getting soggy. This blocks the view into the cage a bit (well about half) but it helps keep moisture in.
