chickens and reptiles?
Today in class we started to study about birds. and with each new topic we take tons of notes about the animal we study. the teacher makes a slide show and we copy it down. well as we were copying our notes a kid raised his hand and asked if chickens were reptiles, and me being absessed about herps i was histerical! I was almost sent to the office because i couldn't stop laughing.
JUst thought yall get a kick out of it

hey i no whut u mean about some people being completly oblivious about reptiles. hey, i have reptiles and i have a pet chicken (believe it or not) and i see no resemblence whatsoever.haha.
We should develope a WWRAW a.k.a- "world wide reptile awareness week, here you will learn how to tell the difference between reptiles and poultry." by the way, this is trey if ya did'nt notice yet whatsup!

wow, now i'v heard ALOT of dumb questions and comments on reptiles but i think that one tops it. the one that bugs me the most is when people think snakes dont have bones, do they look like bugs or something? i dunno...i'v also had people try to convince me amphibians were fish or that turtles were amphibians...tsk tsk
i agree WWRAW would be wonderful for schools!

Do you have any proof that they did not evolve this way?

I think she meant turtles ARE, she was just typing the conversation itself in past tense

I think the person in the class said that because of jurassic park. That whole raptor thing being like birds and such. That movie has permanently linked reptiles to birds.

I wouldn't say it was a dumb question for the person to ask. Since they didn't know, they asked because they were interested in the answer. A genuine interest in an unfamiliar subject isn't dumb at all.
If it was a statement, then it would be dumb

Well, birds are VERY closely related to crodilians and are only one "branch" away from lizards. Birds fall under the clade Reptilia (under the broader Amniota). The Reptilia clade includes the common ancestors of Testudines, Squamata, and Aves.
This is from Herpetology, 2nd Ed. Plough, F.H.
Hope that helps.

I believe that birds have better chances of being linked to lizards than snakes do... I look at a snake and see a fish, really, not a monitor.

You look at a snake and see a fish?
I have heard the iguana tastes like chicken. lol
But I would agree asking a question about something you know nothing about is not stupid. How else are you going to learn if you dont ask questions? I would rather answer a stupid qeustion then have someone make a stupid mistake.
I bet that kid will never ask a question again because of the way you lauphed at him. Thats prob. why you were kicked out of class. I would have done the same thing.
Try to have alittle more of an open mind with other people. Even more so if they are not a herper.
peace

they may not look the same, but its all genetic work they look at... sure chimps and humans somewhat do look alike, but its the genetic makeup percentage thats the same? i think chimps have 17% the same makeup as we humans do, which is a crazy numbeR!!!!
mike
oh, and on a side note, my brother closely resembles a chimp, both in his actions and looks... hes the exception to the rule... i think hes about 99% chimp :P
