Ripleys believe it or not!?

Ok I just watched the show there is 2 guys competing on how many scorpions they can fit in their mouths! (idiots) Now they got aprox 36 each but the one guy got stung pretty bad and his face swelled up right in front of the camera! Sick!
I don't know to much about scorpions but I believe these ones are called Arazona(sp?) Bark scorpions? Does anyone know anything about these? I was just wondering what type of potency the venom?
Thanks
Kim

I saw that a while back. The guy who got sick probably weighed 120 lbs soaking wet. The other guys who was fine was easily over 200. Probably why he didn't get AS sick.

Yep, it's called anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock (and your ability to breathe is certainly compromised). The venom potency is really irrelevant if you have a hyperactive immune system (the foreign protein is the only concern). Just ask Ken (Invictus), who would likely have big problems too if stung by a scorpion's telson....

See the thing I was wondering was he said he tried it a week before and got stung aprox 10 time but didnt mention and bad effects fromit other than pain could the reaction be a result from still having some of the venom in his body still? and it was definatly anaphylactic shock, I am alergic to bee's and have had that happen to myself it sucks you think your gona die :P

Allergies can be a bit funny, you don't necessarily have a bad reaction the FIRST time you are exposed to an "allergen" but generally, it comes the SECOND and further times you are exposed.

The first time, the body is just realizing that it is allergic and prepares a response for the next "attack" of the allergen.

So it is very plausible that this person had been stung at an earlier time with little reaction and then the next time he was stung it cause anaphylactic shock.

Some people can react the first time they come in contact with an allergen but majoritarily, the worst reactions come from subsequent exposures.

Whatever the potency of the venom it seems to me that if this tool survived it wasn't quite potent enough.
