prey sizes
hi all, my BCC is currently on fuzzies but he barely has stretch his mouth at all and it takes him about a minute or so and the prey item has completely passed his jaws. he is only 2.5 - 3ft long and i was wondering, should i try him on adult mice or maybe rat pups? any help appreciated, thanx:thumbsup:

When I got my BCI he was 2' and eating full grown mice. I know BCC have problems with larger prey but I think you could up him to a large mouse or small rat...

NEWBORN boa constrictors should be eating at least hoppers or small adult mice. A boa should never even know what a fuzzy looks like. My 2' boas get TWO adult mice per feeding. With large boids, I strictly oppose the "feeding equal to the girth of the snake" garbage, but you're not even coming close to that. Feed it a good sized prey item that is around 1.5 times its own girth. They aren't hamsters. They are designed by nature to take down HUGE meals.

my hog(bci) is 3' and she eats weanling rats(60-100grams) with little effort.

Feed it a rat equal to or 1.5 times it's largest girth. I can't say what name applies to a rat that big because I haven't seen the snake. But if you go with the girth rule the snake will be fine.
Also according to Jeff Roane rats are easier for a baby boa to digest. He starts his boas off on rats not mice.

A healthy Bcc being kept at proper temperatures shouldn't have any problems with larger prey items. The reason people say they are more prone to regurgitations isn't because of prey size, but rather they are said to be more sensitive to their environment than some other boas are, which can lead to a regurgitation, or a multitude of other problems. I personally don't feel they are all that sensitive, in my experiences.
