Hogs

This is one of my Hog Island Boa females.

She is around 6ft an is still growing. I have seen many posts here and on other forums that say "pure" Hog Island boas don't get over six feet long but many females do and I can prove it.

Mark Wendling was one of the first people to breed Hog Island boas and started over a decade ago. I first met him at a show seven years ago. He had wild caught adults from Bob Sears and later purchased a few from Tracey Barker. One of his wild caught Sear's females was over 7ft and would drop litters of 40+ babies. I was able to see all of these Hogs when I visited Mark's house on many occasions. His large WC female is the mother of my 6ft Hog. One of her siblings that was born a few years earlier is owned by Dr. Shawn Lockhart and is over 7 ft. Mark sold "pure" Hogs for many years and much of the Hog Island boa population in the US originated from him, especially in the midwest. At the last show in Des Moines, IA there were three tables selling Hog babies that were all grand-kids to his WC adults. Chances are that if you bought a Hog in the Midwest it originated from his adults. A few years ago Mark sold all of his animals. His Sears line Hogs were sold to the "Boaphile" Jeff Ronnie, and his Hogs from Tracey Barker went to John Meltzer who is also in MN. My guess is that the majority of Hogs are smaller but a few WC Hogs were larger and are responsible for many of the larger Hogs we see today. So the next time you see a large hog don't instantly think it is "unpure" because you may be wrong.

That's one of the nicest hogs I've ever seen, Jaremy. Overall in fact, your COLLECTION is one of the best I've ever seen. You consistently post some AMAZING specimens on here, and I for one hope that you get an export permit someday.

Hey thanks everyone! I should have mentioned that the she is in her light phase in the first pic and her dark phase in the full body shot. I will be researching what it takes to sell to Canada.

the option of shipping to Canada doesn't look to good. Here is a quote from Robyn at Pro Exotics...

the problem of getting animals to Canada isn't lack of effort from breeders (or even dealers) it is the paperwork and expense involved.

exporting to Canada is pretty much the same as exporting to, say, Yugoslavia, even though you are "right there". there is a LOT of paperwork involved, all kinds of fees, duties, health reports, and more, as well as a 3 month (or more) wait from filing the paperwork to get approval.

for an order of a thousand dollars or more, it may be worth it for both parties, but for a single animal that may cost less than the paperwork, as well as the multi-month wait, it is simply not worth it, to either party.

the best thing to do is to arrange all the paperwork from your side, and have the animal shipped to a broker house or friend's house on the border, and then take the animal across yourself. in more than 10 years of breeding and selling reptiles, i have had ONE customer go through the trouble to do this for an animal (a single monitor). no one else feels it is worth their time.

there is a real lack of reptiles available in Canada, and a great market there just waiting to be filled. it is not for lack of interest that we can't fill it, but rather cost, time, and expense...
