dumb question

just wondering if there is any difference in what people call "common" boas and BCI's.

nope, well not really. to me common boas refer to colombian BCI, but BCI has a huge locality, from mexico to pretty much argentina. hogg island boas are still classified as BCI, but are far from the "normal" common boas that would be found in most pet stores. true locale BCI should only be bred to other true locale BCI. the name mainly stems from the pet trade, whereas the common boa (BCI) is often referred to as a colombian red tail boa, now if it truely was a colombian red tail boa, it would be classified scientifically as BCC.
