Good question, are they American? Maybe they are WC? Well what ever it is all their prices for other animals are fairly reasonable too.

hey Bartman,
The store you mentioned is an American store.. Down there, everything's cheaper than here in Canada.. I searched around American reptile stores which sell ornate turtles for 30 dollars, and other tortoises for really cheap.. I guess it's becasue they are more common in American, and since we don't have that many russian tortoises in Canada, and since they are harder to get, we have to pay more for them.. I've only heard of a few breeders in Canada that breed russian tortoises, but in the states, there's a lot more.. Well hope I answered your questions

The US has ten times as many people as we do and the largest economy in the world. If you've got the money, you can get anything. US$79 is a lot for a Russian tort. I have seen them as low as $49!
They are a bigger market, whether it's hockey or chelonians.
Cheers,
JJ

It actually has more to do with climate. If you could keep 20 or 30 tortoises in your backyard year round anywhere in Canada, like they can in the southern states than there would be a lot more breeders breeding larger quantities. I breed parrots and the difference in pricing between Canada and US is the same for them
My 2 cents

Zhiv,
You're right... I forgot about climate. Most of the tort breeders are in the southern US as well. They can let a the big sulcattas and other torts roam in outside pens or yards.
It's one of the reason, I don't get into torts - not enough indoor space. With aquatics, you can always go up and go 3D in a tank full of water.
Cheers,
JJ

I'm from the US and here I've seen russian torts for as low as $30. But as I understand it, it cost a lot to get an animal up there with you guys. So it would prolly be better to find it somewhere up there for a little more.
