Help Needed!!! Red Eared Slider In Trouble!!!
hey everyone,
I posted this in another thread but i'm realling getting desperate so i'm gonna post it again with its own title. Ok well first of all, I need any info at all housing lighting so on about red eared sliders because my friend houses his in a 10 gal tank with no filter it literally lives in its sh*t. Its shell is peeling i think thats shell rot and its shell is bumpy which is a bad sign. I know its horrible and i can;t stand to see it like that. Acouple weeks ago i was talking to him trying to reason with him about what he was doing and to take better care of it, i even offered to pitch in for new tank and filter but he just ignored me and said its his only friend and blah blah because he thinks his life is over cuz his girlfriend left him and hes being really stupid about it just because hes feeling are hurt is no reason to take it our on animal anyways I'm hoping that he'll either clean up his act sell it to me or if not could i call human society or would they do anything? If he gives it to me i wanna be able to house it. I saw a pic on this forum ahwile back of someone housing there slider in a big black sorta kiddy pool with plants and stuff i was wondering how much one would go for and could they climb out?( how high should sides be). If human society take it what will they do with it. because i think i could find acouple of people i know how r really good with turtles to take him. And the heart breaking part is its been living like this for 12 years isn;t that disgusting. Plz any help would be great

Are you sure? Just a question, how old is this turtle's owner? Is he adult age or still living at home with his folks? The reason i'm asking is that if he's still at home with his folks, you could try and give some turtle care info to his parents. Its their job to ensure that they're child is being responsible in taking care of his animals. Perhaps they just don't realise the problem? By giving them some info and explaining to them the damage that is happening to this poor little guy, they should feel compelled to step in or atleast encourage their son to improve his habits.
If he's an adult, please ensure that this turtle does in fact go to a new home and he's just not procrastinating. Shell rot is serious if left untreated and that's just the disease you can see. There could be a million things wrong with this turtle that are internal or even psychological.
I know this because for years I don't feel I was a very good owner to my RES but have since been educated and improved my care habits. Now, i've got happy turtles who'll be with me for many years to come.

It's awsome that you're trying to help. Just be sure he is actually going to someone else. The owner may just be putting you off.

I would either take it(although I don't have the room) or house it until I find a home. But your a long ways away. Maybe some one closer to you can help. 'nudge' 'nudge'

My concern in regards to this is that its really not your turtle to give? I'm worried that the owner and/or the owner's parents have different ideas about giving the turtle up then you do. Can you confirm that everyone is in agreement here?
I personally don't have the room or ability to take care of another animal right now. I couldn't keep him with my other two so would need to create a new environment. However, i'd like to know your answer to my questions above.
