Great Loss

Today has been a sad day for us. Our dog, Tisha passed away while giving birth to three little puppies. She was a beautiful Chinese Pug. We will remember her for the happiness she gave us and her cute ways. She left us with 3 cute and healthy puppies. We are determined to raise them up. This is our first time raising newborn puppies and ANY information and advice would be greatly appreciated. We know we have to feed them every two hours and stimulate them to go to the bathhroom. We thought we would share this, in loving memory of Tisha.

Please pick up some puppy formula, but until you can, condensed milk, water and egg yolks mixed and warmed will suffice. To stimulate them to use the bathroom, we warmed baby wipes and wiped their little rear-ends until they went. You will need to get supplements for the pups to replace what they will lose by not having the mother's milk. The formula and supplements can usually be purchased at food mills and pet stores, the pet stores are rather expensive usually however.

There are many online resources and I had one bookmarked prior to our crash that told how to make formula exactly for pups, I remember that you had to keep the water content up (I believe it was 2 to 1) and it was several egg yolks (4 to a can I think) to one can of formula mixed with water and if I recall correctly, you added yogurt at 2 teaspoonsful to each batch for the yeast because pups need it.

I hope that helps somewhat, at least it could possibly get you through until you can find formula suitable for pups. We used regular baby bottles for feeding with smaller nipples and opened a little larger hole in the nipples, we prewarmed them in hot water, however you can use a dropper until you can get some bottles.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog, we love pugs, they hold a very special place in the heart of their owners.

Puppy Formulas

Recipe #1
2/3 Cup Goat milk canned (or just regular canned milk)
1/3 Cup water or Pedialyte
1 teaspoon Karo Syrup
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon Dyne or pediatric vitamin

Strain a couple of times to make sure there is no albumin in the mixture, although it has been used successfully without egg at all.

Variation: 1 can of Condensed Milk rather than goat's milk (it may be too high in protein and put a strain on the puppy's kidneys 1 envelope of Knox unflavored gelatin in addition to other ingredients (helps keep stools solid).

Recipe #2
1 cup of canned Condensed milk or evaporated milk
4 ounces plain, full-fat yogurt
1 egg yolk
1 dropper full of baby vitamins

Mix well.

Recipe #3
2 cups hot water
1 can Evaporated milk (Not condensed--both are in bakery section of store but different products)
2 eggs
2 tablespoons Karo syrup
2 envelopes Knox unflavored gelatin.

Mix thoroughly to get the gelatin working.

4 ounces Carnation EVAPORATED milk
4 ounces FULL FAT natural, plain yogurt
1 tablespoon Mayonnaise, (NOT salad dressing and definitely NOT DIET)
1 egg yolk
1 dropper full of human baby pediatric liquid vitamin, no fluoride.

Whiz in blender...feed baby.

Milk Replacer Formula:

10 oz. evaporated milk (whole fat or part skim -- do not use all skim) or goat's milk
3 oz. sterilized water (baby water or boiled water) -- delete if using goat's milk
1 egg yolk (raw)
2T regular mayonnaise (optional)
1 cup whole fat yogurt (whole fat or part skim -- avoid all skim)


Place all ingredients in a blender and mix (or use a wire whisk) till well blended. Use all formula within 7 days.


Warm formula to puppy body temperature before feeding. Always discard formula leftover at a feeding. This formula is thick and so is best administered by stomach tube. If using a bottle, you may need to enlarge the hole slightly. It provides 11 calories per cc.


Weak Puppy Booster

This formula is meant to be used on newborns who are chilled, weak or otherwise compromised. This formula should be administered every 1-2 hours (or more often) by stomach tube and the puppy should be warmed slowly. Once the puppy begins to maintain a normal body temperature, regular feeding can resume. NEVER FEED A CHILLED PUPPY MILK REPLACER.


8oz. lactated ringers solution or sterilized water
1 tablespoon white Karo syrup or white sugar (do not use honey)
OR
Substitute plain, unflavored Pedialyte


Mix ingredients and warm to body temperature. Preferred administration is stomach tube (to ensure correct dosage). Feed 1/2 cc per 2 oz. of body weight once per hour. If puppy is very weak, you may half the dosage and feed twice as often. This formula should be followed up with milk replacer as soon as the puppy is maintaining normal body temperature. This formula should not be fed exclusively for more than 8 hours.


That's just a few, I'm still trying to find mine because it worked gangbusters and produced some massive, healthy pups.

The orphan formula I always used sure helped when I had a problem....

1 8oz plain yogurt (with live cultures)
1 jar strained baby beef (not junior)
2 egg yolks
2 cans evaporated milk
12 oz sterile water

Blend with blender then wait for bubbles to settle and stir. Use premie nipples. I found that it all wouldn't fit in the blender at the same time so I would blend all the ingredience except one can of milk and the water then I would add them in a clean container that I would put in the refrig. Warm enough for each feeding.

I also used this for weaning pups by adding regular adult kibble in the blender. I have told a lot of breeders about this formula over the years and all have had great success with it. It firms the stool and if the pups should get too firm, just increase the water in the formula.
