Respiratory infection :(

Well, darn. Here I thought I'd never have one in my collection and guess what?

My adult male sonoran has RI. Since RI's are secondary infections, that means he has a bacterial infection somewhere and I didn't see symptoms until I attempted to cool him, and bam! Now he has RI.

I just noticed it this morning, he was wheezing, and there is a swollenish part under his throat (not too swollen). I immediately turned his temps up-warm side is at 95 right now.

Then this afternoon, he was bubbling out the tip of his mouth. No runny or stringy saliva yet.

I'm taking him to a vet tomorrow, but I've heard bad things about the two antibiotics I know she will prescribe-Amikacin and Baytril. Can anyone suggest a good antibiotic that they have had experience with?

thanks,
Cat

It really depends on what bacteria is causing the secondary infection as to what med is going to work best. I've treated some RIs with Baytril and had excellent results because it was a good med for that particular pathogen. In other cases I've had Fortaz or Cipro that worked well.

I far prefer oral Baytril to injectable because Baytril really hurts but if the infection has settled in oral meds just don't work quickly enough.
