Unhappy Rubber hides

Morning all,
I've been reading this site for about 6mths now and have to say I love it. It's been very educational.
I have a question.
I have a ball python that's been growing like a weed and it was time for a new hide.
I bought a rubber pot last night and converted it into his new hide. Black heavy duty rubber. Saw it in a pet store and bought one.
I wanted to know if it was OK to use a rubber hide?
He spends the majority of his time on the cool side. As soon as the new hide went in he's been over on the warm side the whole time. Not sure if he's just getting use to it or maybe he doesn't like the rubber. Could the smell of the rubber be bothering him?

any help would be appreciated.
