A Fuzzy Winter Predictor? *pic*

Here is a pic of the ubiquitous Wooly Bear, the larval stage of the Isabella Tiger Moth (Pyrrharctia isabella). I have always been facinated with the traditional lore of this caterpillar and I found an interesting website regarding this common (mis?)conception.

Wow! Very awesome pic! We get caterpillars quite similar to those, except they are black and yellow; which is the larvae for the Monarch Butterflies here. I can't touch those particular ones though, because they give me a rash... there must be an irritant on the ends of the hairs to protect the caterpillar from predators.

We used to get those ALL the time here in Olympia, WA. Now they are rather scarce-I think its due to the amount of spraying being done. Noticed even the garters are disappearing.
