Depending on the particular species, males usually have another year and a half to live AFTER maturing. males do not live as long as females. Females usually mature AFTER the same aged male has died of old age as to prevent inbreeding.

Any ideas why there is a color variation? I saw some at the show they were very cool looking.

Tim,
I only have a theory as to why they have a color variation. I beleive they were ONCE either a different species OR they once were a specific color for a specific region. They are however not anymore IF they once were as many color morphs may be found in a particular egg sac therefor siblings may have different colors. Same is true for the striped knee, Aphonopelma seemanni.
