ive been really thinking of starting with venemous reptiles. I have handled pgmy rattlesnakes.. but dat is my only experiance.... i just wanted to know if anyone had any info on how to get hold of venemous snakes.. if Ontario Canada allows it... and if not what kind of steps would i have to take to get a permit?
thanks

No offense, but you would not have to ask these questions if you were truly prepared and capable of keeping venomous snakes responsibly.

There is nothing wrong with asking for advice, but do not expect a lot of assistance from the hot keepers except possibly in the line of an offer to train you. These offers are not made every day, and you should feel honored when they come up.

If anybody offers to provide you with venomous snakes, or worse, venomoids - the best advice I could give you would be to run away screaming. Just kidding. But in the interest of your personal safety, I would seek some training before deciding to work with hots. This is not a skill that can be learned from a book. "Learn to do by doing" is a haphazard way of keeping hots, and will earn you no respect in the venomous community.

Maybe one of the many experienced keepers on this forum has some advice or training to offer - we do not keep hots.

I am not a hot keeper yet but when I read your post it looks like you haven't even thought about it for 2 days. Keeping hots ain't the same as bying a car. I am now learning about the hots that I want for over 4 months now and still I am not ready for them. I have to make a cage ,. buy different hooks, look for AV, contact some keepers for training and stuff like that.

so please think about it for a few weeks before you even ask for venemous snakes. First look up the standard information then start your study..
cheers

In Ontario the keeping of any reptiles including hot snakes is controlled entirely by municipal by-laws. There is no permit system you just have to see if your local by-laws forbid you to keep them. However bear in mind that not being forbidden to keep something is not the same as a permit to do so and that you are still ENTIRELY liable should something go wrong or someone make a public safety issue of it. In Canada the venomous communitee is very, I'm sad to say, secretive about its affairs because no one wants their collection destroyed because they told the wrong person.
Best of luck.

I am already preparing for getting venomous snakes for a whole year. I searched contakt to other hot keepers and trained to handle their snakes. You should also regard that different species are very different to handle so I wouldn't buy a snake that I have not yet tryed to handle. Certainly this wil change when I am more familiar in using hooks and so on at various species.

cheers

I have always wanted to keep hots but I know that it is impractical for me. I just kind of live vicariously through the hot keepers that post pics and tell of their experiences.
I haven't researched the legalities of owning hots in my part of ontario but I assume that it is prohibited so that is another reason to just look at the pics and sigh. Oh well, you can't get everything that you want. Where would you keep it all ??
