Just wondering if anyone knows where I could find some information on using Nix to treat snake mites. You know, something from respected sources, chemical actions, any side effects, proper mixing instructions, I'm sure you know what I mean. I'm asking because I mentioned it to the guy that runs the pet store I help out at as an alternative to Ivomectin, but until I can prove it works and is harmless (when used properly I assume) it won't happen. There's a baby burm that I'd like to see miteless and his Ivory soap approach doesn't seem to be working. Thanks!

I don't know about nix, but I know ivory soap seems to "dry" things out. It's a pet store. Why don't he have mite remover for snakes??? Try asking a local vet....

I tried the ivory once because he insisted, but even he realizes it's not working... he's currently sold out of mite remover (not a fast seller apparently, but the few bottles that were in stock are gone). Personally I'd rather see him get more Ivo, but alternatives have to be looked into. I'd like to see the end of the mites before something else gets them or another shipment comes in... and btw, it's in quarantine

if you are in a pet store am i right to asume you have a laundry tube in the back somewere ? if so fill the tub with about 6-7 inches of water and add about 1/3 of the bottle of NIX swish it aropund till you get some suds forming put the snake in it for about 15 minutes (supervised) with a very gentle cloth soaked in the nix water ,wipe around the face and head don't submurge the the snakes head in the water. once that is done you must clean the enclosure so put the snake in a clean steralized rubber made or a clean pillow case and used a 50/50 bleach solution clean the inside and out of the tank and EVERYTHING IN THE TANK ...if there is alot of stuff in the tank with the burm dispose of anything you can afford to replace the other stuff let soak over night in a 50/50 bleach and HOT water solution...once that is all done giver everything a wipe down with clean hot water B4 the snake gose back in do the same proccess with any other snakes infested with mites i guerentee you it will work i used to take alot of rescues and i lived by that meathode i will stand by it .....good luck

I've used the "old fashioned" method on my skink.
She has snake like scales, so it may work for you too.
She had LOADS of snake mites when I got her.
I would soak her in a sink full of warm water, for 15 minutes or so, then after the soak, I would dry her off with a paper towel, then coat her in a light film of vegetable oil.
I put her in minimally furnished aquarium with one disposable hide
box.
I did this every day until I found no more live mites on her, or in her tank for two full weeks.

As crule as this might sound this is how I cleand my hole collection in less the 4 days.

I took a Rubermaid for every snake then I placed enugh water that they can literaly swim in with some palm olive just to make a few bubbels I also place a rock so they can rest there head on but there body stays sumerged I leave them like that 12-24 hours it a HEATED room crank the heater if you have to keep that water warm or you will be looking at a wole new ball park of problems. Then I put them in a dry Rubermaid with nothing but paper toweles as a substrat for the secound night affter 24 hours of drying off and leting dead mitest fall off I take a BBQ brush and brush on 100% olive oil and let that stand for the next 2 day DO NOT give the animal water during this time if it soaks it will remove some oil.

After the 4 day process you will see minamal mites if any I keep them in there dry cages with nothing but paper toweles a hid and a water dish wait till the falowing shed B4 you replace it in a display cage.

As far as cleaning the cage properly go with ScreamingMisfit tips that wil kill any thing that may be remaning.

One person reported using NIX (an over-the-counter preparation for human lice infestations, similar to Rid and Pronto, which contain the same ingredients), mixed 50/50 with water, applied to the snake. It was left on for no more than 10 minutes. The snake was then rinsed thoroughly to remove all solution residue. It was reported to have been effective. Another person reported using NIX full strength on his two snakes. He left it on for ten minutes and then put the snakes in their enclosure, into which a No-Pest strip had been placed. One snake died within 24 hours, one survived but was weak. Organophosphate poisoning from No-Pest strips can, and have repeatedly, caused damage to the reptilian (and other animals) central nervous system; many have died. It is not known in this case whether it was the full strength NIX, the No-Pest strip, or both in combination that cased the death of one and subsequent health problems in the other.
