You will just have to get out and search around and under everything. The best places are close to a good water source and with many places to hide.
Be careful though because removing box turtles from the wild is illegal in some places.

As Jayson said, please buy one that is captive bred! Don't intentionally add to the tremendous stress that wild turtle populations are already under. And yes, check your local laws to see if you are even permitted to have one. They are protected in many states where they occur in the wild, and with good reason!
