Only 1.3 rats colony??

Why rats set to breed in colonies of 1.3 while mices' colonies are set to 1.6 or 1.10?

Room. Rats can be run in 1.6 colonies as well, only reason I run mine in 1.3 is because the tubs in the rack will not accomodate any more than that. I don't know of anyone using colonies as high as 1.10... again I suspect it would probably be room... a colony that size would take up an awful lot of space. Mice are miniature... you can run 1.6 in 10 gallon aquarium with room to spare... can't even run a 1.1 of rats in there.

I found that more efficient (for mice) are colonies to 1.8 or 1.6. As for rats, they must be only in high cages?

We know that rats need tall cages. Can we offer them lower cages? Is that alright? Will there be any problem with pairs-breeding or anything else?
