My Dad Wont Let me Get a Ball Python
hey guys
i got a problem, how do you try to convince a father to let you get a python? it is getting silly now...
reptiles have been a part of my life for a long time now, and now i have no more i have been looking for something to keep...
i have researched LOADS and have come to the conclusion that a ball python would be the best idea at the moment, so i already had my various vivariums, and its all setup temperatures are all perfect and its fine.... now my dad says he doesnt think i should get one (my dad is BIG, not many people like to mess with him...), so being a good kid i decided to argue... not a good idea, i have made some progress, he is starting to warm up to the idea t a certain degree, but he still says no...
my mom and brother are supportive, my brother moreso, i was thinking that i could just go out and get one without any of them knowing, but then decided against it as it is his house, and it just wouldnt work....
anyone here ever been in this situation before?
help me because i am going insane without a reptile!!!!! (all that research is going to waste here!!!)
do you know the feeling?

I know the feeling man...My dad STILL wont touch any of my snakes..Scared to death. Just be like "Dad, they are NOT hard to keep, not dangerous..Etc" and shoot off your knowledge. When i did it, my parents realized I knew what I was doing, so they let me have one. Good luck!

Yea, I had the same problem getting my first snake, and scorpions. You just need to show your mature, and have a good basis about the animal. Dont get off their *** on it, and eventually it'll all come through

Go on about how the cage is secure, let them know that YOU know what your talking about.....try and find someone that is around and let them either go over to their place or have them bring a snake to your house to let your dad see it and such.......show him that tank that it's secure......leave information laying around about the animal........

Now i even got my dad to HOLD on of my lizards and thats a huge accomplishment..im gonna work on letting me get one small snake but fornow im fine good luck

Unfortunately, I think you are at the mercy of your dad.
Your profile doesn't say how old you are, but I assume you are under 18 right?
It may be best to just wait until you have your own place to live, although I'm sure that seems like forever to you now. When I lived at home, I had the hardest time trying to get my mom to allow me to have pets. We had an old cat and 1 dog. That was all that was allowed in the house.
Now, I have: 2 cats, 2 dogs, a bird, a ferret (my husband's), a ball python, 3 leopard geckos, a saltwater aquarium, and a baby on the way. If it weren't for the baby, I would have a brazilian rainbow boa now too. I'm think going to have to wait on the boa until I get used to having a child around. I think I must be rebelling against my mother still!
You can try letting your dad see that you are mature enough and knowledgeable enough, but chances are his mind is made up.
I wish you the best of luck!

yeah, i have bred leos and have kept beardies in the past, they know that im quiete capable of keeping all these animals.... but he is mainly concerned about me getting distracted from my school work... that is the main thing..... i think that snakemann87 is right in saying that i gotta do this on my own, i have already started talking to him about how it is kept and all that, and i think he is starting to warm up to the idea that it is not all just scales and a flesh-eating monster, i mean he hears the word python and he was like "Oh god its gonna eat the dog if it gets loose..what about the cats... oh no!!!" but i explained that if it came into contact with the cat it wouldnt kill it, and that it probably would be the other way around.... and then went on to say that i had bought a lock for the tank doors... he is beggining to turn from a steel wall of NO! into a hedge row... lol
anyways
cheers for the advice about the repile shows, but here in england shows are always stopped by anti-reptile fanatics... which means hardly anyone is starting any shows now... so yeah i think i will be showing him the python soon.. and that it isnt like the movie ANACONDA....

my parents arent too keen on me having another herp either!
i know that the only way to get them to let me have another is if i adopt one from the rescue which i volunteer at, because im giving it a second chance!
have a look for rescue centers, go to your local rspca and see what you can do!
or find someone who has snakes and take your dad to handle them (thats what i did)
do LOOAAAADS of research buy some books and show your dad that your'e swatting up on herps, and show that your'e truly interested!
GOOD LUCK!!
btw: there are some shows coming up, eg: the IHS one....

IT all depends on what type off Dad u have. If he is really strict wait to move out but if he is kinda chill, maybe sneak to a pet store with him and have a pro show him what its all about.
good luck with it.

I know where you're coming from, it was a huge struggle for me to get even my pet turtles when I was still living at home. Right now, my mom would NEVER come over for a visit if she knew there were snakes in my apartment. You should think long and hard about sneaking a snake into your house... would it really be worth it if you undo all the good convincing you've been doing and really piss him off?
Good luck in changing your dad's mind!
