Sexing and aggression...

Hey everybody! I was wondering why people have to probe their bloods/STPs when the males have spurs? I just checked under my Borneo and I could plainly see the spurs beside the vent. Also, I've heard males go through a stage of aggression when they are going into maturity? My Borneo is slowely starting to get more aggressive and have striked at me a few times.
Thanks for any help!
Adam

Both male and female pythons have spurs. Some of my females have larger spurs than males. Probing is the only sure fire way to sex a snake with popping comming in a close second.

Wow, you learn something new everyday! I always thought it was just the males. What about my other question, do only the males go through a stage of aggression?
Thanks,
Adam

Adam,

The sex of the snake doesn't really matter how aggressive they will become. With any snake you can have really calm ones and really aggressive ones. Most CB ones do tame down though. Red Bloods are just like burmese as babies.....they will bite you while still in the egg.

Adam,
Both sexes can go through a stage of aggression. usually around 1 1/2 -2 yrs old when they're sexually maturing.
I've had some go through it, and some that havn't.
If you notice any of your snakes harder to handle and quicker to bite for a couple of months, then just leave them alone for a while until that aggressive stage is over.

Yea Grant, that's what I was talking about. My Borneo is getting more aggressive as time goes by, I guess I'll just let him do his thing until he's over it. Hope this stage doesn't last too long!
Thanks both of you for your help!
Adam

Adam,
In most boids, both sexes have spurs. As forementioned, females may have larger spurs than males, or vice versa. The exception to this rule are rosy boas and sand boas. Females typically do not have any spurs, and they can be reliably sexed in this manner.
