back ups
do any of you have power back ups for your herp collections
such as a generator or like a battery back up

no..but i figure if there is a power outage it wont last very long. Except for the one that just happened and still that was only like 8 hours. The chances of that happening again are slim to nothing. I dont see why you would really need one..just a thought

No backup here unfortunately, although, the ambient temp. in our herp room has been so warm that we haven't even had to use our heat sources. I'm thinking about getting a generator before the winter though, especially since Invictus and I have 14 snakes now to heat.

I have used inverters for Python incubators. I feel it's a necessity for any commercial breeders with high end Pythonidae.
Protecting your freezer stock is also of high importance, and since most inverters with gel cells just wont run for a day, I will now be looking at a gas powered generator, bascially just for the freezer and to run my furnace in the event of a winter failure.

Are you talking about a 12 volt inverter?

that black out lasted 27 hours for me..i didnt have any backup power, my cal king cage dropped to 70 on the hot side.

I don't have any backup at the moment, but I've been wanting to do something about that. Summer isn't an issue, but when the power goes off in winter, we've got about 30 minutes before the temp drops dangerously in our house. When there's potential for blackouts in winter storms, I usually call home at regular intervals. If my answering machine picks up, everything is ok. If it doesn't, the power has gone off and its time to run home.
Eventually, I hope to install a system that automatically kicks in when there's a failure. I expect a hefty price tag, but the peace of mind is worth it.
