Red Eyed Tree Frogs handleability vs. ?

So the more I see pics of them, and have to work with them too, I really think they would make an awesome little shelf pet for me. Finally all my bugs have died off, and I have made the decision to not keep invertabrates anymore, I have 2 openings. I havent been able to find out the handleability of these guys though. We don't handle the ones at the store that often since they are nocturnal, but on the occassion that we do, they are seemingly a little jumpy. Is this typical? Are there any other nocturnal species that do not need supplemental heat (my room is DTH 83-84, NTL 80), maintain a small size, and are handleable?

Hoes about Horned frogs.. they don't do much but I find can be handled very well ..

i would not handle frogs except maybe the spider monkey frog cuz they dont really jump,frogs are just mostly for looking at

I am not going to be playing with my frog like I would a snake, but I would prefer when cleaning not to have it take the mighty leap for freedom and have my cat get it or leave me with some messy war wounds when I stick my hand in to change its water.

Hey linds, you should ask Joe&Melissa, they bought some at the recent Port Credit show. They would be able to give you a good idea about handibility. Im thinking about getting some sort of frog as well. Their just too cute to not want.

Personaly I don't like to handle my frogs at all, and I have quite a few species. Well, I'd obviously never handle the dart frogs, but the other species would be ok if need be.

White dumpy frogs are super easy to handle if you REALLY wanted to, because of their type of skin compared to other frogs, they aren't as sensitive. They've quite a tough hide...if you want to call it that. And they rarely take off, they are quite content sticking around and looking up at you like "Did you bring me a treat??" (trust me, I have a male that literaly BEGS, and will even croak at me to get my attention during feeding time)

Red eyes are jumpy, it's pretty typical, the odd individual doesn't mind. I have one female that will usualy stick around (quite literaly speaking) if you do take her out. But I preffer not to, incase I handled anything prior that she could absorb through her skin (ex: Hand moisturizer, chlorinated water). Since after all....they absorb just about everything that way.
But then again, I'm a paranoid person when it comes to my pets.

They are mostly something pretty to look at, and if you're up at night, they are one hillarious sight.

And about cleaning their terrariums/vivariums. I normaly just take them out and put them in a critter keeper on the side while I clean up the tank. I've had too many bad incidences of them trying to get away when I'm not paying attention. But then again, if you only have one, it shouldn't be an issue. But I've got a bunch of em....so I've gotta do a head count after every cleanup, and I've found that just collecting them, putting them in a C.K on the side, really helps keep them 'in line' during those brief cleanup periods, rather then stressing them out by having them out on you while doing cleanup.

But thats just my humble opinion.

They make wicked pets though, pretty easy care...and I find frogs in general to be quite curious (asides the couch potato types). Which makes them incredibly adorable...

This thread is a little on the old side, I decided to go with a horned frog - more specific albino argentinian. He just sits there like a big yellow lump in the moss lookin cute from my bug shelf, he stays inside when the lid comes off for feeding and cleaning. Doesnt bite me when I move him for cleaning (though that sort of surprised me...lol

) Perfect for my needs
