Delivery through UPS
Hey, anyone ever shipped or received a reptile via next day UPS? I want to make sure it is safe. People at UPS seem to be unable to tell me if they take special precaucions when delivering live animal packages.

Shipping through any ground courrier up here is a total no-no, I do believe you guys have better options down there, however UPS is not one of them!

No, I use Delta Dash for shipping any live cargo in the US. You can pick the animal up less than an hour after they land. It costs more than UPS next day, but so much better for the animals.

Personally I haven't gone that way I use same-day flights. However, I am looking into it right now & have heard of some problems but they could have been avoided. I guess the most common problems are improper air holes, lack of styrofoam (which is a must to regulate temp), shortage of protective newspaper around the snake & finally improper labelling. The package must be labeled as having live reps, which side up & fragile. As I continue checking into it I'll let you know of anything else I find of importance.

UPS is good. I used them again last week to ship leos to FL and not a problem. There on time, safe and unharmed.

Well Ben Siegel said he's going to ship my lizard with UPS. I called Airborne Express and Delta Dash, and they do not ship cold-blooded animals! UPS said that they did ship those, however I am still worried. I guess I'll just cross my fingers. I'm sure he sends them this way all the time, and he has a 7 day live guarantee. I just don't want him to be traumatized, I've never received herp by delivery before.

Thats true it is a no no. But it is done all the time. I've always gotten my animals from a breeder or show, so I have never used any of the shipping companies. I've heard that UPS is a little risky. Airborne Express is supposed to be better. But like was mentioned above Delta is the best. The only drawback is that if you don't live near an airport.

But Airborne Express and Delta Dash told me that it's against their policy to ship snakes or lizards! As i said, I'll keep my fingers crossed!

I got one of my snakes threw Airborne Express, he came threw just fine. If Ben fells comfortable shipping threw UPS you should be alright, I'm sure he ships that way alot. good luck and I hope it turns out okay.

No sure who you talked to, but Delta dash is the only way I have ever received reptiles and it’s the only legal means to ship venomous period.

Yes, yes, yes. It's getting better all the time. On my way back from lunch I ran into our building's UPS guy. I told him I was having a lizard delivered and to keep an eye out for it. Said that he used to deliver reptiles, had a pet store on his old route.

Deer fern farms ship their Uro's United states post office. The price is about the same. USPS has garunteed next dat delivery. And the best part is, there is a post office in every town. So deerfern just marks on the box to leave it at the post office, and have the owner come pick it up. Its one less truck the animal has to sit on.

Ouch! Seeing some of the packages I've received via the mail you would assume that they were used for foot ball tackle and wrestling practice.

Actually, I have recieved shipments via most of them. Airborne, UPS, and FedEx. If asked, most will say that shipping live reptiles is against POLICY. (but not illegal). It is, however, my understanding that shipping them via USPS is illegal. A huge % of US dealers ship either UPS or FedEx, and as long as they are sent in insulated well ventilated packaging should be o.k. The idea is to get the pkg. to the shipper (although bigger guys have pick-up) just before their last afternoon pick up and lessen the time in their hands. That way, if it is scheduled to arrive before 10:30 am, it will only be a matter of 12- 15 hrs total. My exp. have been satisfactory. Big ticket items and such, I would use Delta Dash or Northwest Air Cargo. I have heard some good things LATELY about NW, but have yet to use them myself.
