Its a particle board covered in a plastic material, usually white or off white. Loads of kitchen cabinets are made out of it..

Almost any hardware/building supply store will sell it.. its fairly cheap, at home depot here its about $35 (canadian $$) for a 4'x8' sheet. For a bit more they will cut it up for you (highly reccomended)

at Home Depot your first 5 cuts are free, each additional cut is $1.. a 4x8' sheet runs about $22 at Home Depot here.. As for your glass door question. You can buy plastic glass track at Home Depot for $7 a length. Thats top and bottom. That price is for a 4' length.. Now that i have said Home Depot enough times maybe they will send me some free Melamine!!

Check the price on different sizes. Here 1/2" is $25, 5/8" is $26, & 3/4" is $34. I think the prices is a reflection of demand, most cabnets are 3/4". Depending on what you are build and the free unsuported spans 5/8" may be good eough. In fact 3/4" could be overkill.

Just my 2 cents worth

If you pick up a corner of 5/8" melamine, you'll notice it doesn't cave in the middle at all. 1/2" will cave a bit, so that gives you an idea of the strength. 3/4 is not exactly overkill, but you'll pay more for pretty much the same strength.

We go with 3/4", the screws stay in better and it won't flex as much.
