Burmese python
hello everyone i wanted yalls opinion on this...
I have been considering keeping a Burmese Python for some time now, and really want to. I can supply whatever size cage is needed and i breed my own rodents so that isnt a concern either. I am 15 and 1/2 years old and have been keeping herps for sometime, i have kept eastern boxies, leos, corn snakes, ball pythons, rat snakes, garter snakes, and rtb's. i think i may be ready for one, i LOVE the albinos too. I am going to get rid of my entire collection(almost) before i do this so i can spend more than the amount of time required. Let me know what yall think and tell me what ages yall started keeping yours at, thanks guys

You sound like you have enough experience and have researched this thoroughly, but I have 2 concerns.
The first is your age. Are your parents ready to give up a bedroom for a 15foot snake that could eat you? And do you know someone who will for sure take this huge snake when you move out into a crappy little apartment? Or go to college or military school?
The second is the fact that you are getting rid of your entire collection. If you don't have enough time and money to be able to liberally spend as much as you need on any and all animals (and still have lots left over), you probably don't have the time and money to take care of this huge snake.
I don't keep any, but when I am comfortably settled in (in a house with an extra bedroom) I will probably get a nice rescue burm.

Zoe,how come you post in forums in which you have no experience in?Like why would someone want your opinion on an animal when you have no experience with it.
On to the question at hand. I believe that Auddi would be able to house the snake. He/she DID say they can house the animal no problem. So I would say they will be able to build an enclosure fit for a burm of any size.
I do agree that you shouldn't get rid of your collection for another animal. I am sure you will have time for the new addition along with the rest of the collection.

this isn't a husbandry question, its common sense. It's not like he's asking "whats the proper way to hold a burm".
My opinion is entirely valid, based on facts, logic and common sense. It would, in fact, be hypocritical for me to tell him not to get one if i had one myself. I follow my own advice.
And why are you complaining about this when your opinion is the same? Or are you still mad that you couldn't tell the difference between a normal and an albino leo?
And read what I wrote - i didn't say he couldnt house it. I asked questions to make him aware of some of the repercussions. If he answered correctly to all those questions, then by all means get a snake.
Zoe
Oh, and if you don't want my opinion, bloody put me on ignore already and stop irritating me.

You contradict yourself. You say yes he has the knowledge but then you go and show him the repercussions. Either you believe he does have the knowledge or he doesn't.
Why would you bring up another thread where i mistaked a TANGERINE for an albino, not an normal for albino. Where as in the saem thread you have done the same. So in turn you just took a shot at yourself.

a burmese python can reach 10 feet at 18 months if fed heavily ...
normal feeding it would take more time for this baby to become huge so Auddi01 will probably be 18 when the snake gets to a reasonable size try not to forget that us human grow as well
but i don not suggest that you get rid of your collection you might regret it
give it a lot of research and thinking and do the right choice
good luck

Auddio1.... how long have you been thinking of getting a Burm? and how much do you know about Burms?. I have 3 big Burm's right now and many other big snakes when you get into the larger snake's it is a big change from what you say you have had in the past. You say you breed rodent's well that is good for now but Burm's can not live off of rodent's for ever. My youngest burm at 13 mounths is now eating big rat's and small rabbit's and it is about 8ft long it don't take long for them to grow as for the cageing you will need i think the (spare bedroom thing is a bit over the top) but you will need a good size cage for a Adult Burm
I am not saying that you should not get a Burm but at your age a Ball python or a Boa might be a better choice for you
Good luck with your Choice
Brandon

because he's asking for opinions. and ya know, when people ask for opinions its nice to give it to them. politely of course.
mk- yep i hear ya, it'll take a while. but when he's 18, thinking of moving in with his girlfriend (who could hate snakes) into a little apartment that doesn't allow pets. I know he's probably planning not to be in that situation, but we all know life doesn't go as planned. I'm interested in the health and happiness of this snake, not "i can take care of it"s that may or may not end up in a sick neglected snake.
Auddi - don't take any offense to this. You sound like the sanest person your age who wants a burms. It's just that you are at an unstable age right nwo, and who knows what lies ahead of you in 3 years. I think it'd be wisest to wait. Keep your current collection, and in a few years when you're settled in, you can then get a burm and be happy in the knowledge you can keep it forever, and you'll still have your old collection!

Snakes dont need That Much time so you could keep your collection without problems,
I think the only thing you need to know is if you are really prepared to that kind of snake,
It looks like you do know what are their requirement, so I guess you will think twice before getting one...
You just have to keep in mind that it WILL grow huge and you will need an extra human to watch for you when youll be taking him out when hell be big enough to squeeze you
Take your time and good luck

now when takeing on a burm there are some things you want to keep in mind. 1) make shure you have a spair place to put it you dont need an entire bed room but you will need about 1/2 of it i keep my burm in a cage with a floor space of 8X4 in my room. alot of people think that is a stupid thing to do, because then i dont have any place to put all my stuff and i had to get rid of alot of it too. but remember when you get a burm it is a large commintment and you should plan on keeping it till it dies (of natural causes) i dont know anything about you situation (money, how big your house is ex.) and i am not talking just to you when i say i am not going to critisise just enphasize on the points of keeping such a large boid, because what people need is support and knologe from people who have had these anamals. if you do go into burms it wouldnt be a bad idea to breed rabits. i dont, but 10 pound rabbits can get excpencive when you go thorugh 4 a month.

If you have researched and are ready, get a burm. I had one when I was your age. You can do it. Zoe, I appreciate your opinions. They are usually well versed and based on facts. Keep up the good work!

thanks to everyone who has said anything, i appreciate and respect all of your opinions. I have decided that i am going to wait a while and then try again. My parents said that i cant get one unless i got rid of my other specimens tho( 3 Bp's,2 garters, 6 corn snakes, 8 boxies, and 5 grey treefrogs) I didnt want to lose them all so i am going to wait a while and try my parents again, maybe when i get 16 and get my liscense it will be different... thanks again guys!

Well I will tell you what (I) would do now you are at the age the your experience is driving you twords A chalange.
I burm is a great CHALANGE the are big fun to work with and for the seriouse herper verry verry rewarding cuas you see a pic from when you got it and see a pic one year latter and say to your self I did that I frew that beutiful beats.
The bur is also know as the gentel giant not in the first few monts of life but in due time.
Now I have slimed down my collection many times in the past so i will give you my opinion on what I would keep.
Not this is just my personal prefrence.
I would keep: 1.1 Bp's, 1.1 corn snakes (your favorites).
Now why did I choose thows.
I will tell you why cause in a few years your burm will be big and you will nead some extra cash well you have breeding pairs of the most populare snakes in the world so they will sell easely and that will give you the room needed and you will still have some sort of colection.
