Cage Size?
I've been highly considering a Ball Python for my next Boid. I love boids even though I only have one. And I more specifically love smaller pythons.
I have no clue on the proper size of the enclosure though. I would want one for a full grown ball. My Spotted Python is in an enclosure that's 3 feet long, one foot high and one foot wide.
Would that be reasonable? I usually like to get an enclosure that's as long as the snake, but I heard that Balls will not thrive in that.
So what would be good measurements for a ball enclosure. And I am well aware of the fact that you need alot of hiding places because they're shy.

I use 33g laid on their sides this gives me 36Lx18Wx12H. I also use 40g breeder which is really nice it is 36Lx18Wx18H. If you like rubbermaids the under bed ones work well. Anything at least 36L and 18W will do nicely.
Cheers,
Trevor

Wow....so a bit bigger than Montey's cage! That would be great. I know they don't like it TOO big, but I also don't want to cramp them! That's why I was worried.
Thanks Trevor
Jenn

A good rule of thumb is to give them one square foot for every foot of length. So a four foot long ball python would have an enclosure that had four square feet of floor space.
I really don't think that they would "not thrive" in an enclosure that is too big. Baby snakes may feel uncomfortable in a large open space but there is no reason not to give them a space that is not so open. If there are lots of places to hide and a good temperature gradient then they should thirve in any enclosure.

It all really depends on the size of your BP, I have house smaller males in 20g tanks with no probs but my bigger girls I had to keep in a cage that was 36x24x18 so a 55g tank.
