biggun

as i set out on a leasurely herpin' walk i decided to check a regularly forgotten area with my friend and my brother, a large hollow tree known for its large black snakes. an inspection of the tree reveiled nothing, nobody home, until i noticed a new vine!!!!!!!! it was no vine, but a 6 foot 4 inch black snake, laying out for a snooze. i sent my friend to retrieve my tongs and hooks so we could capture and document him. this was easier said than done, and fifteen feet up was too far for my equipment, and resorted to sticks. after some manipulation he lost his balance and fell!!! dont worry i caught him safe and sound. he was very docile, and quike to get away when released

If it was an Indigo, you should have kept it.

If it was a black rat snake, it seems that all of them that I find are calm as soon as I pick them up. When I was in NC, I was walking through the woods and I came up on a 4 footer and I just casually reached over and picked him up mid-body and he didnt do anything but flick out his tongue at me. I had himn for about 5 minutes before releasing him and the whole time he just looked around.

Neat snakes, they are.

Most rat snakes do not respond aggressively to human contact. Notice I said most. We have caught maybe 10 this year. 9 were fine, acted as thought they had been raised by humans. Last week Joe hads a 6 footer out cleaning the cage. He got my attention then passed it to me. It chewed up both hands before I could grip it behind the neck. Thanks Joe BUNGHOLE, I owe you one. =)

I have caught and kept over 50 Black Rat snakes in my days and have seen them both tame, and both mean as all get out..........Now the black racer has the real attitude and speed and bite to back it up..............
