Best Carpet!

I just wanted to know which of the 3 subspecies is the best to start with?

depends on what you call or consider the "best".... you know what they say... "different strokes for different folks"

I think you'll be happy either way you go... I started with a coastal and he's great..... I almost got a jungle but I wanted something that would get a little bit bigger.

Like I said... what would you consider the best?

Thats right, IJ and coastal act much alike being more terrestrial,and slow in hand. Jungles are arboreal and usually move quite a bit in hand.

As you have kept large snakes already, I'd go by the look you like best. With Morelia you can't go wrong.

Yep... they all pretty much the same except for colour and size different.

Mardy - you've observed your IJs to be terrestrial? Mine spend like 70% of the time on a shelf, 15% in branches and the rest on the ground.

Yeah go the costal carpet, nice big strong snake with a good nature and easy to feed.
I dont know if you guys get em in different colours over there but the can be every bit as stunning as a jungle only BIGGER

We get a few shades in the coastals but not the
kind you get to see. Some jungle x coastals are large and jungle like here.

Zoe as they become more heavy bodied adults they
spend more time on the ground.

Yeah, you might want to look at a cross, too. I am not for cross breeding sub species by any means, but I do admit it can result in wonderful snakes. for example a jungle x coastal could be a bit smaller than a coastal, have the pattern of a jungle and colour of a coastal (or vice versa), the tempermant of a coastal etc. They make for some cooool snakes.

I did mean the three more common subspecies, I don't think I wanna drop big bucks for a diamond or Bredls just yet Next question pricing on the 3 Main subspecies there ta go Jeff which of the 3 is generally cheapest to get?

It can be tricky sometimes, but here's what I've found about the pricing here in Canada and in the States.

Coastals are the cheapest. They are not as colorful as the other two and they have HUGE clutches. 40 eggs is not uncommon!! That's 2-3 times what the other two normally have.

The next cheapest are the Irians. They are still imported and the price of them never really hit very high. They started at $500 or so when they first came in, but quickly dropped to the $200-225 CDN that we see now.

Jungles are usually the highest (except maybe in the US, where Irians are about the same, or sometimes higher). Not by much. Maybe by $25 or $50.

Keep in mind that you'll have this snake for 15-20+ years so spending $300 on a snake is wise. Look at the 3 snakes, look at the colors and patterns and size and pick what you like best. No one can tell you which one is best, because everyone has different likes abd dislikes. But you're gonna have this snake for a LONG time, so you might as well get something you're still going to enjoy in a decade.

I've always wanted a carpet python, but I didn't know the coastals got bigger and had bigger clutches. I was going to get a jungle, but I think I'll look into Coastals.

I love the look of some jungles the really contrasty ones black on yellow but they probably cost an arm and a leg lol. I have just been thinkin carpets latley cuz they not a big a burms & tics but then not so small either, plus they seem relativly tame and not to hard to breed. Thanks for all the help I'll be sure to post pics when I decide what to get.
