Smile New BP

Hey everyone, I have been to the site before but just now decided to register. I got my very first BP today and am really excited about it. It is a male and he is very active. He seems awful skittish whenever I get too close though. What can I do to calm him down and get used to me?? Anyway I will try and get some pics of him up.

Josh

When I first got him I left my ball alone for about 2 days. Begin to touch your ball slowly from the behind and your ball will like it much better if you touch him at night. Just slowly progress and soon youll be able to touch him anywhere. Mine use to bite at me but now i can pick him up anytime and anywhere after about 2 weeks of him calming down.

Hey there Cyrus! Welcome to the site and congrats on your great choice of a snake! Your snake would be very appreciative if you follow my advice and leave him alone for at LEAST a week. The move is quite stressful on them, and the new enclosure doesn't help much neither. Very active sometimes is a bad sign. Are your temperatures right (ambient of 80-85 hot spot of 95)? And more relevant do you have an adequate amount of hides? Again, although i know how hard it is to resist, trust me, leave him alone for a week. At this point, take him out, slowly, every day or so for a few minutes to allow him to get used to you.

I was wonderin if I should feed him or wait a while. The pet store says they feed every week on thursday but they hadn't fed him yet when I picked him up. I am not sure if I should feed him now or wait a week. Also the pet store was feeding him live. I know I don't want to do that but do you guys think I should just try giving him a f/t or should is there a trick I should try. Thanks

Hey Cyrus! I am so glad you are questioning what the pet store told you, very smart of you First off, is this a young bp? If so you might want to feed every 5 days. Try to at all times feed rats, much much more nutritional. Personally I would wait a while. He might not take it right now so it might be a false prediction of a problem eater. On top of this he had a lot of travelling and changing of enclosures so he will just want to be left alone for a while. When you feed him for the first time, please to not try to feed with your hands. Just throw a DEAD rat in there and let him be. I would also recommend not holding your snake for 2 days after feedings. Good luck and enjoy your new little guy! BP's are addictive!

The pet store i bought my bp told me the same thing, that he will ONLY eat live prey. Well, just to see what he would do, i bought a F/T and wiggled it in front of him, about 3 min later he snatched it from me and gobbled it down.
Why shouldn't I feed with my hands? Is it safe to do when he's small at least?
