Mite Problem...HELP!

Ewwww! About a year ago my ball python had a mite problem when i got him and it took awhile to get rid of them. I had to clean his cage everyday until they were gone! Recently i discovered the same proglem with my rainbow boa. I have no idea how she got them, and i was wondering if there is a save and easier way to get rid of them.

You can get one of the products on the market to get rid of them(provent-a-mite, blacknight I think is another one). If you are feeding live or p/k could be where you are getting them from.

Take the snake out and put it in a tub to soak in water. (Only enough water to go about half way up the snakes body) While the snake is soaking take the water bowl out of the cage. Spray everything inside the cage with Proventamite, Sawyers Tick Spray, or Repel Permanone. Stir the substrate up and then spray again. Cover/Seal the cage and leave it for an hour. After the hour is up air the cage out for fifteen minutes and then put the snake back. Repeat in 10 to 14 days if needed.

Follow Zoe's advice & visit the site listed & do things proper. In the case of a mite infestation under no circumstances, no matter what you are using to eradicate them, do you keep the old substrate etc. Gut everything in the cage & keep the animal in "clinically clean" conditions (white papertowel or something) until your treatment is complete. Never keep the existing substrate as it will be crawling with them & their eggs. Once you are 100% sure they are wiped out, treat em again to be 1000% sure. A little bit of paranoia goes a long ways with mites. Assume that since you have allowed them into your house that they are crawling everywhere in the vicinity of the infected animal & treat all other animals & their cages in the same area as if they are infected also whether you have observed them or not. Don't quit when you think they are gone, quit when you know they are gone. I would much rather do an extra treatment for nothing than to start all over from square one & still have mites. I treat all new specimes as if they have them & reccomend others do the same. If you do you will never introduce them into your collection by mistake. Better safe than sorry when it comes to mites. A little preventative medicine can go a long ways. Seriously Mark I.
P.S. NIX rules it kills both them & their eggs & can be used directly on the animal (when in the proper dilution).

similar to stormyva. i use the same direction for soaking the snake, but i add a little bit of non sented soap(dove).
i throw away all disposable things inside the cage(substrate)
then i will blast the cage with black night a couple of times after cleaning it with virosan while
the water boul is soaking in hot water 1bleach to 3 parts water
or i use virosan. make sure to fog all mite highways (trash can, around cages) in the immediate area with black night. also bake your wood products in the oven for about 1.5 to 2 hours @
250 degrees, let cool, assemble cage black night one more time with water boul empty let sit for 15 min then replace the snake
and fill water boul. if done properly you will have fixed the problem. they say to do it again in 5 days for 2 more times,
but if done right you wont have to.very, very effective method.
if you have one cage, no problem. when you have several cages is when it is an all day project. good luck!

im sorry,i forgot to add that when you remove your snakes from the water and dry them, put them in a rubbermade and give the actual snake a good 1! i said only 1 second blast. you dont want to overwhelm the snake. good luck!
