Tokays

Hey, I've had a pair of tokay geckos for about a month now. They are gorgeous, and definitely...interesting. Just wondering if anyone out there has any general tips?

What kind of tips are you looking for?

How to tame them .. how to handle them .. husbandry .. breeding ..

With some info, I am sure many of us could help,

Dom

We sold a Tokay to this guy at one of the PCPC shows a year or so ago, we had a pen pal on the table with a few in it , he asked how much so I told him $20 bucks if i catch it $5 if you do,he said he had some at home and they where not that agressive.....So anyways I put leather gloves on the table for him (he chuckeled) said he didn't need them.....well anyways this guy reached in and grabed one it turned and grabed his knuckle and litterally tore the skin off of it...He wen't to the washroom to clean up, he came back an hour or so latter and wanted the same deal.......his blood was still fresh on the floor in front of our table........ I told him no

I'm basically looking for husbandry tips. Yeah, I already know they're agressive (and my boyfriend's already been bitten). I'm looking for good ideas for substrate, decoration, hidey holes, etc. Also, anybody know a good way to move them from one cage to another? We just did our first tank cleaning last weekend and it was...interesting.

I currently have them in a 25gal. high tank with a big log, covered in fake vines. We feed between 10 and 20 crickets about every other day. We recently bought one of those "Tropic Air" humidifiers from Petsmart and it seems to keep the humidity up pretty well. What gets me about these guys is that they are so unpredictable. And I don't mean their agression. You don't know how many times I've thought the smaller one was dead, because he lays so motionless (even when poked). So basically, I'm looking for good care tips. Thanks!

tokays

Sounds like everything is fine, just make sure they have lots of hides and lots of vertical wall to climb. With two tokays, you could probably use a little bigger enclosure. For taming them, if they are already adults, it is probably too late, but who knows. I had a baby Tokay once, that i made sure to handle everyday, she is still quite tame today at 3 years old. But she will hiss and bark when i pick her up, but i she hasn't bitten me. Their bite is bad as they will not let go untill THEY want to!!

Despite their aggression, they are beautiful looking animals, and are one of my favs to sit and watch at night.

I hope this helps.

Sounds liek u got all covered..

As for taming..

As Tom said .. start as hatchingls and go from there .. be persistent and consistend with handling and he will stay tamed all his life!

Cute little guys!

Cage size...

What seems weird to me is that everything I've read says that they are territorial and take atvantage of all the space in the cage...but mine usually lay on each other! It seems liek they've got a lot of extra room in there, but one day I may be able to get a bigger tank. I don't think they're too old, but I'm not sure. I'll try to measure them sometime.

Albino

Hey Albino, 50 bucks a peice is outrageous for a Tokay, they shoul be around 15-20, that is what they are in calgary.
