My new Stinkpot! PICS!

I just caught him today. I think I will keep him. I'm setting up a nice 10 gallon with just enough water to submerge his shell about an inch. He is really tiny, about a month old at most I would guess. I'm gonna set up some rocks out of the water for basking and fix a UVA,UVB basking bulb above it. This little guy is sure neat! Now, for the pics!

Hmmm. while searching the net, I found some pics of a three stripe mud turtle. I guess that is what this is. Not a stinkpot. Please excuse my error.

P.S. here is the tank I have him in.

Hey...Cool turtle, but give it more to hide in and a basking spot that is 100% dry..The bricks look a bit wet which can lead to fungus's on your little fella.

Actually, common musks rarely will bask and do not require UV, nor a heat lamp if the water is the proper temperature. I've had mine for two years and have never seen them come out of the water. They do not behave like sliders, painteds, or other mostly aquatic turtles. A friend of mine has a community tank set up with various fish and three musk turtles and a mexican mud. No UV, no basking areas, no land area whatsoever - just lots of plants and such for them to grab ahold of and they are doing excellent.

I see what you mean Tim, but think of the odds of this little guy living. With all the 3' Gar in the river, I think it would have been eaten. I just think that the odds of it making it to adulthood in the wild are quite slim. So maybe I'm doing him a favor and he will live a long healthy life!

True there are a lot killed by natural predetors but that is the way it is. Unfortunatly. So why don't you captive breed and do a release program? Release a few when they are bigger. Just an idea to help the natural population thrive. I am by no ways giving you the but what if eveyone took one speech but wild turtles are a precious thing and need conservation. Just keep it in mind. I love the fact that there is a lot more interest in turtles. They are amazing. Thank you for not getting defencive. I thought about my reply for a while before I decided to post. I hope you enjoy the little guy.-Tim
