why do they never seem to fit?

I've got all kinds of lids for my setups, but out of all of them, only ONE actually fits snugly. Is there a way to make them fit, or am I stuck with them? Anyone else run into this? Worst case, I've got a lid that's both too long and too wide for my king snake, and even with lid clips it made me nervous enough to set a big chunk of driftwood on top.

Sorry about going on like that!

Try Velcro. You can buy it in strips from any hardware store. Cut the loop side into two squares. Put one square on the lid one square on the tank. Don't remove the backing from the hook side. Use the hook side to hold it together. The move you use the stronger the bond (more loops and hooks). You can also buy industrial strength velcro. Remember velcro was invented by N.A.S.A. it can have a strong bond! If you have anymore questions please PM me. It's late and I probably wont remember answering this thread!Tim

I've encountered this problem a few times in the beginnings of my herp keeping. I had quite a few tanks already but without lids and finding the right ones was a pain. In aquariums there is generally 2 standard lid sizes, ones for "Hagen" tanks and ones for "Miracles" tanks. Both manufacturers produce same gallon size tanks so you have to try with both lids to find out which one you have. Obviously if you see a Hagen logo on the black rim, you have one question answered there.

What I did to make sure I had the right lids for all my tanks was I went to local shops that carried both types of lids, explained my situation and asked if it was ok to exchange the lid I had just purchased should it not fit. I never had a problem with this, brought it home and tried it, went to change it if it wasn't the right one.

Now I have so many tanks that if I need an extra lid I can try out the ones I already have to see what kind I need!

If the lids you have already purchased haven't been used, you can probably still exchange them for appropriate sized ones.
