Soil covering?

Is it necessary to cover soil in a tank for firebellies? We are using pure sphagnum peat moss (the base for most potting soil mixes) that we have a bunch of pothos and a spider plant in. We just put our firebellies in there tonight and decided not to feed them until they get a little more used to the new tank.

So far there is nothing on top of the soil so they are just dragging it around with them and getting it in the water and making it really dirty looking. Is it safe to just let them stay like this or should we cover the soil with something so that they don't eat it or anything?

Any info is always appreciated.
