Housing 2 chams

Hey

I was buliding a cage for my female vailed cham and wile i was doing it i noticed how easy it would be just of a a few feet of wood and make it Alot bigger. so i desited to do that. but i was curous if it would be ok to house a male cham in the same cage as the female cham year round. i have been leaning twords not doing it because they are very solatary anamals in the wild but i would like your oppinion on it. it is a very large cage (by the way)

How big will the cage be?

I always say no to housing male and female chams together. The males are ALWAYS interested in breeding and this can cause great stress on the female if she's not tolerant of his advances. It can lead to fights between the two if he becomes persistent. I've heard of cases where the male goes off his food because of the presence of the female. There will also be competition for food if kept in the same cage.

I agree, but on the odd chance they do get along, once she is gravid you will have one PISSED female (meaning they will really go at it). However i have used a large cage and divided it in half making it look like they are housed together but they cant even see each other. Take a look at Trace post below about the male veiled who had his way with different species... too funny.

Yes, I agree with previous, it is very risky housing male/female chameleons together....o.k. for the first 6/8 weeks but no longer. I have been breeding them for the past 4 years and it's never worked yet!! Good luck.

Not worth the risk!! Worst case scenario - males have been known to kill and eat females housed in the same cage. At best - the stress of living together will significantly shorten their lifespan.

It is recommended that female veileds not be allowed to even see a male until they are at least one year old to delay egg production. And I can attest to males going off their food if they get a glance at a female without being able to follow through!!
