found a snake!

some little kids around my house came to my door holding a snake, they knew I owned some snakes and asked me what it was and to take it from them.

so I looked it over and I have no Idea about corn snakes but thats what it looked like, its only about 5, 7 inches long and a redish brownish colourd with white, gray braking the redish brown up. what is it? can I let it go??

any advise would be great.

Audubon Society and The Peterson Field Guide.

If it ain't in those two, it ain't native to North America.

I went over to its little incloser today and found it looked a little sluggish, so I desided to take it to the vet (just to make sure) and my vet said it was Dehydrated, so he injected some fluid in to it and told me to watch it for a few days, but I don't know how to care for a milk snake!

what temp would it need, the same as it if out side cuz its really chilly out?? should I put fake plants and stuff in for it???

any advise would be great.

Here is the thing I didn't know it was a milk snake when the children handed it to me, it wouldn’t move and its skin was very wrinkly. All I was trying to do was keep it healthy I have no intentions on keeping it. It was dying from dehydration I took it to the vet.

I've rehabilitated animals in my area for years now with my vet, but this is the first milk snake I’ve dealt with,I have however dealt with many garter snakes, birds, raccoons and deer, forgive me for trying to help some times humans come inbetween nature and the out come is not a good one, I volunteer my time to save these animals not to "mess with them" for fun or something.

I understand where you are coming from .. but I think what Grant meant to say is that It's a wild animal and it belongs in the wild ..

I personally would of simply released it as soon as I knew that it was a milksnake .. keeping him even for an extra day could only make it worst for him...

I also doubt anybody told you to release it on the road.. read between the line .. release it in the area it was found that is safe .. ppl in this forum were simply trying to guide you - I doubt they apreciate the sarcasm..

With some luck the little guy will be fine

I would have to agree with that nature dose do a great jod :O) but sadly our world is falling apart and some times nature can’t get things done, as for the papers I do have documents and permits saying that my house is legally allowed to contain Canadian wild life, for the purpose of rehabilitation.

As for The snake, it is now in a safe tucked away area of forest where I am sure it will live a long and happy life.

As for my pervious post my tone was not one of disrespect, and I’m sorry if it read that way, I apologize.

But please understand I’m not doing this for fun, I assure you I am not. I have had to watch many times as garter snakes or frogs die because people run them over or spray around their pesticides. I help that’s all, I don’t go around looking for wild life to keep as a pet and I just want to make sure everyone knows that. It was a mistake; I thought the snake was a Corn snake (not native to Canada) and that it looked sickly, which was proven true.

Please don’t think of me as some awful person holding wild life captive I’m not. as I said before I was trying to help. The snake was not handled (it was avoided up until we administrating fluids) and then warmed up and re-released. The only thing I would take back is the man handling done buy the children that found it. I hope this clears up our little disagreement.

Nature always gets things done....its not that our world is falling apart, its that it is evolving....

We too may disappear like the dinosaurs one day due to nature and the surrounding worlds....thats just the way it is...

Nature is always seen as loving and beautiful, but thats not the case and never really was....

I know how it is to see a wild animal in need of help or percieved as in need of help, especially since we are ones that devote our lives to these things....but the only interference i can agree upon is euthanizing an animal to put it out of its misery....but even then, some could say i'm being a hypocrite here...

U found the snake, u have a choice to do what u want with it, and we just have an opinion...

Whats done is done...
and lets hope the little guy is doing allright...
Theres so many sides to this debate that it isn't even worth debating...
