Poisonss Frog Keeper Too

Hi Laurier,

My list of poison frogs isn't as extensive in terms of species, but I do have the following:

2.2.36 Epipedobates tricolor (Phantasmals). Yeah, that 36 is correct, I've been pretty lucky breeding these guys (they are about 2 months out of the water). Boy it takes a lot of fruit flies and crickets to feed 40 frogs! Any suggestions for increasing the fly yield? (a really good ff media anyone?)

0.0.4 D. tinctorius (Cobalts). They were sold to me as "high yellow cobalts" so I'm not exactly sure of there exact morph. They look a lot like your Brazilian Yellow heads but I'm not sure if they have quite as much yellow on the heads? These are great frogs!

I also have mantellas:

2.1 M. expectata (blue-legged mantella). The males are calling all the time, and the female is HUGE, but they haven't produced ant eggs yet. Any ideas how to get them "going?" I've "dried them out" for a few weeks and then flooded them already, but no go!

1.0 (I think?) M. pulchra. You have any idea where I might find a girl?

Hope this helps to get the thread going.

hey,

awsome collection duncan. As for fruit flies i am seeing if i can bring in some dry mix from ed's meats in the usa because at this time i am just feeding crickets because they are much more healthier for the frogs. But crickets get way to expensive.

http://www.doylesdartden.com/fruitfly.html

check out the media mix's here. I have tried the apple sauce one before but it stinks up your room and its repelling after a while.

Your tinc's are probably surinam cobalts. The brazilians only grow to be the size of an auratus (1.5 inches) while the surinams grow to be around 2.5 - 3 inches. The surinams can have that yellow head but the only difference is size because the brazilians are dwarfs.

As for your mantellas i am sorry to say but you will have to run around to pet shops or contact someone that can get mantellas in. This is because of that fact that madigascare (sp) has stopped export all herps.

as for the difference between mantellas and darts, dart can be larger and they like there temp hotter (by 6 - 10 more degrees) I personally like darts better than mantellas because they are more active, well all the mantellas were shy besides this one M. crocea i have seen.
