yesterday we noticed our puppy wasn't acting the same as always. he would always run around and chase me, but all he did was lay with his ears down. around 4 my sister found that his nail had broken off, we are gonna take him to the vets. it seems like hes in alot of pain cause hes no where near what he usually is.

this is how he is everyday.

this was him yesterday and still today

heres his toe, its worse than the picture shows it to be.

has this ever happened to your dog? hes going to the vets tonight.

Hmmm no never happened exactly like that....although I have had dogs all my life.

The toe may very well be infected hence the reason he feels so down...does he have a fever? You can usually tell, heads and nose is warm and dry.....the vet will be able to help. Its good he is going tonight.

Keep him hydrated! Just like a sick reptile

I hope everything goes well....update us after the vet!!!

his nose isnt warm, just normal, and his head is too. Actually hes drinking right now

I had the very same thing happen to my retired greyhound but on a larger scale. He lost all of his toenails and only had the tip of the bones exposed.

The vet won't do all that much to help you out. Treatment for this is cleaning & dissinfecting the paw regularly, 2-3 times a day for the first 3-5 days and then once a day for a week or so after that.

It will heal up and a nail will start growing again but not like it used to be. My greyhound is doing absolutely fine now and his paws don't bother him at all. Try not to worry too much, it's not too serious of an injury.

To help prevent this from occuring again, be sure to trim your dogs nails regularly, even if it's just a little bit. Once a week is the norm.

P.S. You can dissinfect with peroxyde, baxedin and other gentle antiseptics.

Temperature and wetness of the nose is NOT a good indicator of a dog's health. This is a very old "wive's tale". His behaviour, disposition and physical appearance are the best signs to start with.

I've had nails break off when they arent trimmed or worn down naturally, usually indoor dogs, but never down to the quick like that one is.
Low pile carpet is a mother on a dogs nails, especially if not kept trimmed real short.

Looks like he may have snagged it while running and pulled it off.
Have you put anything on it such as neosporin?
The neo with pain relief should be safe for him and eliminate some of the tenderness.

ok thanks Pixie, he is due for a checkup anyways. His behavior, dipostion, and physical appearance(ears down?), are all not the same, thats how i figured he wasnt feeling good. Thanks everyone I hope so too

he is outside alot, i swear this dog has a bladder problem

I sure wont discourage a visit to the vet!!! Just that if that was his only problem, it could be taken care of yourself. It's normal that he isn't his normal self if he's in pain.

I hope he heals up nice and quick!

My dog was better after 2-3 days, the first days are the most painful for them.

My dogs nose and head have always been scortching hot when she has had a fever? Is this conicidence? I hope not. Sometimes I have disregarded her behaviour because everything seems fine when I feel her skin or nose...temp wise that is. I have always taken that as sure sign she had a fever...and it seems to have always ended up being the case? ?

Nevermind I answered my own question...LOL...I read that its not always a sign of fever but can accompany it. Her nose usually does. lol

The best place to check to see if your dog is too warm and may have a fever is the inside of the ear. Gently press the palm of your hand against the inside of the ear. It's very hard for us to determine fever by touch alone because a dog's normal body temperature is warmer than ours, I believe around 39°C. So at anytime you would check your dog for fever, he will always feel hot to the touch.

Only a thermometer can give an accurate reading and I'll leave that job up to the vet!!! LOL
