Wondering About Proper Cage Sizing

Hello! I am super new to this site and trying to do some proper research before purchasing any reptiles, specifically a snake. I have two 10gl tanks and one 20gl tank. I am wondering what kind of snake/s could I house in any of them? Most of the information I have found seems kind of up in the air, depending upon how big the snake grows. If there is no snake what kind of reptile could I house in the smaller tanks? I know this is specifically a snake forum, but hoping you reptile lovers could help me with that information as well. Both sound small for long term housing. I keep baby garters in a 10 and 20 long, but plan to rehouse them in a 40 breeder when they get bigger.

Here's my advice. Find a species you like and buy an appropriate enclosure. Don't buy an animal that lives for 25+ years because you have a $20 enclosure sitting around.

The 20 gallon can probably house younger corn snakes for a while but would have to be upgraded. A good reptile for a 20 gallon would be a leopard gecko you could not really house any other adult snakes though.

You could possibly house a Brown's Dekay snake in the 20 gallon tank, but fisrt you should check with your state regulations to see if there are any restrictions for keeping native animals as pets.

Sell both and get a larger tank.

That aside, if you're stuck on those you could get small snake species like garters or ribbon snakes. Amphibians like fire belly toads or a lizard like pictus geckos.
