I drilled my first holes high, near the RHP and let the probes dangle down to where they sit on top of the hides to get a better temperature down below.
If you keep your probe up high, then use a laser temp gun to get the temperature down at the hide level. This will result in a higher temp on your probe since it is so close to the RHP.
The next cages I put together, BoaMaster, will have the probe hole drilled down low, at the level of the hides and not dangling down from on high.
