I did something similar with aquariums, setting a smaller tank atop a larger one. I cut a piece of pegboard to cover half the larger tank, with a large area cut out of the middle to allow the snake access to the upper level. Thinking to do a similar setup with my 12 gallon aquarium next, with a 40 breeder on one end. Some live plants to help maintain humidity too.
Only difference with a plastic tub would be securing it. Glass aquariums are a bit too heavy for a snake to lift to escape from. If you're using a wooden top just drill a few small holes and secure the rub with zip ties.
