Hello everyone!
Hello everyone!
I'm fairly new to this whole snake thing, just a few months ago I decided a snake was the right pet for me. Originally I was planning on getting a baby Ball Python, just waiting for my local reptile shop to get one that I fall in love with. While I was waiting, I fell in love with a very spunky baby Albino Western Hognose. Unsure of the gender, I named it Dingus (although I'm pretty sure shes a girl at this point) I have to say, I couldn't be any happier with her shes a sweetheart when she wants to be and a pee flinging hiss noodle when she wants to be left alone. So much personality from such a little worm. I'm a very proud father, and I'm always trying to improve her life anyway I can. Hence why I'm on here to hopefully get some great knowledge. Little Dingus is such a part of the family that my sister even knitted and mailed her a sweater for Christmas. Don't get me wrong, that noodle is my daughter, but I don't handle her all too often. If shes above ground poking her head around the enclosure door I'll pick her up, but the only time I ever pull her out of burrows is if she hasn't been up and its time to clean the enclosure (these are the times shes a pee flinging hiss noodle). I'm even getting tempted to get another snake, I've been thinking of a tree python. Although I know they have many more and different needs then a hoggie, so it will be a long time of research and preparation before that would ever come about.
Well, that's pretty much it for my introductions. All that's left is some sweet baby snake pictures.

Re: Hello everyone!
Welcome to sSnakes. Great choice on the hognose. They can be picky eaters, but have lots of character. I'm sure that you already know that Hognose are rear fanged and very mildly venomous. The only reason I mention it is because there have been a couple of people here who were bitten by their hognose snakes and had allergic reactions with localized swelling and minor pain. Great little snakes!

Re: Hello everyone!
Because they are rear fanged, your going to literally have to let your hognose chew on your finger in order for anything to happen. The max amount I have heard them capable is similar to that of a bee sting, so don't worry. They don't strike with their mouth open a lot either, hognose snakes are well known for their bluff strike, where they strike with their mouth closed to scare a predator. They are also quite vocal, and hiss a lot. With consistent handling, these behaviors should die down quickly.

Re: Hello everyone!
Better choice of words, "....these behaviors should cease eventually."
Using the word "die" might scare someone!!
