New member, question about this forum

Hello, nice to meet everyone. I plan to be a long-term member since this forum was helpful to me for months before I even joined.

I've been visiting the forum for quite a while as I was getting ready to purchase my B.c.a. (brought him home 8 days ago). Here's my question: I haven't for the life of me been able to figure out what the numbers mean when people are describing their pets. Presumably 2.0 BP means they have 2 ball pythons, but what exactly does 0.1 mean? I thought it might be length, but then I swear I saw someone put 0.2 hamsters, so I'm totally lost. What the heck are you guys talking about? I wanna join.

I have just the one amarali, and he's perfect. Incredible disposition for a baby boa, totally chill with everyone, yet still has a great feeding response as soon as he catches the scent of that mouse. So far he's been fantastic. Not nervous, though he is cautious (a good sign in my opinion - if he were *too* chill, I might be worried). Hasn't snapped at anyone in his life as far as I know, has never hissed or made a sound. Searching and exploring, regulating normally, readily eating f/t, seems to be a great little dude.

He's just a few months old so he's that beautiful silver color. Attaching some pictures.

Re: New member, question about this forum

Welcome to the forum Fee. That's one beautiful boa you have. The numbers you asked about indicate the gender of the snakes kept. 1.0 is a male, 0.1. is a female, and 0.0.1 is unknown. So a 2.3.4 would be 2 males, 3 females and 4 unknown. Hope that helps and best wishes.

Thank you! That clears that up, lol. And thanks for the compliments on Saxon. I'm still getting to know him and thrilled to be doing so.

Re: New member, question about this forum

Thank you! I've recently picked his (permanent) name. I was calling him something else for a few weeks but didn't like it. In honor of his color and his Bolivian origins (full of volcanism), I've decided to call him Tephra. I think it's beautiful, unique and suits him.

I'm really looking forward to all this as a hobby. I always thought of snakes as low-maintenance pets but when you're still in the learning phase you find there is much to do and learn. I just finished reading The Complete Boa Constrictor by Vincent Russo and was happy to learn some things about the amarali subspecies itself.
