Do adult ATB,s need a hide on the branches?

Do adult ATB,s need a hide on the branches? or just on the floor? My GTP does not need a hide anywhere. How different are ATB,s from GTP,s in this matter?

Adult amazon tree boas need thick foliage around the branches in order to make them feel secure. They will almost never utilize hides below their perches.

For the other arboreals i would say this is true, but ATBs most certainly do use ground level hides regularly. I agree with the foliage part, though.

Really? That is very interesting. Did a little bit more research on my part, seems
they do spend more time on the ground then other arboreal species of snake. They really are quite special.

So you can utilize a hide box if you want, but the majority of the boas time will be spent on its perches, so make sure to provide thick foliage, plastic or real plants it doesn't matter as long as you keep the proper humidity.

I have my ATB since about 6 months. Within this period i saw him only 3 times using his hide on the ground. The rest of his time was on his perches. So i,m going to provide him a hide on the ground just in case if he wants to use it. He has a big enclosure, no shortage of space to do that. I have provided him with lots of perches to climb on. Thanks to your advice, i,m going to provide him with a thick foliage, plastic and real plants so he could feel secure. No need for a hide on the perches i guess.

Re: Do adult ATB,s need a hide on the branches?

I watched a video years ago of a guy who claimed that if set up properly amazons will spend the majority of their time off of the floor. I now have 4 amazon tree boas. I keep 2 in fully bioactive vivariums and 2 of them in tub set ups with perches, hides, and fake plants. I will say the 2 in the bioactive vivariums have been in their enclosures for over a year and I've only ever seen them on the ground at night here and there for a short period of time while they're out exploring. Other than that they spend all of their time resting on perches underneath foliage and crawling around on the branches. The 2 in the tubs display the more commonly observed behavior of spending about the same amount of time on the ground and on their perches. This leads me to believe that if given the opportunity to live in a more natural setting they will prefer to spend their time above the ground. That being said, I'd take that with a grain of salt as I'm sure others have probably had different experiences.

(I'll also add that the snakes are all varying ages and sizes, all kept at the same temps, and the bioactives have just as much if not more foliage to hide in on the ground, but choose not to use it)

My guy is a baby in 24x18x24 planted exo terra. I've seen him sleep on the ground and perched or in a cork round that's in the air. Seems to pick a new spot every night.
