Let the waiting begin...
Placing my FWS application in the mail tomorrow. Plan is for 2 Eastern Indigos, a 2014 female and a 2016 male. No clue how long application will take.
Hopefully updates to follow!

Very cool! Hopefully it'll be a relatively quick process.

Re: Let the waiting begin...
does the fws give you the snakes in the hope that they'll produce more?

Give? No... you purchase the snakes from a breeder who supplies a "breeder statement" for the FWS affirming the snakes are captive bred and born.

I've head similar, however, the breeder says he's recently had turnaround in about a month. Since it's the government, I'm banking on the 90 days.

Re: Let the waiting begin...
It depends on the field office processing your application and how quick they are.
As I recall the application was 16 pages long and they wanted a diagram or photo of your snake room and enclosure. You send FWS $100 for a permit. The breeder sends FWS a seller's statement. Then once you are approved you send the breeder $1,000 or more and you get your snake.
I was all set to get an indigo until my husband--who tolerates the snakes but is uneasy with them--heard that they get up to 9 feet long, have crazy feeding responses and bludgeon / tear apart their prey. This terrified him. I told him they were otherwise gentle and intelligent snakes but he couldn't handle the prospect of having to feed it if I was sick or incapacitated so I pulled the plug.

Re: Let the waiting begin...
Yep SD, that's about right. The 16 page app is also for "Recovery Permits", so in the end, you're only really filling out a portion of the 16 pages. Got my photos all included, along w the rest of the stuff they want to know (what other species do you work with, 2 year mortality in your collection, etc).
As for the word "bludgeon"....That's such a harsh word.

Re: Let the waiting begin...
I should have told him they massage their prey. Very, very vigorously.
It would have backfired the first time he saw the critter eat though.

Re: Let the waiting begin...
Sounds like a great new project MDT. I'd love an Eastern Indigo but we can't keep them here in GA.

Re: Let the waiting begin...
Cool animal to get.
Curious.
Who are you buying from? I know there is a breeder in California that will help with the process.
Also, what are you doing for a cage? I know someone here has a pretty cool cage with a drawer/ burrow. Name escapes me.
