My intro...
Hello!
I have been lurking around the forum for a while, reading and looking at pics. But I couldn't see all the pics cause I wasn't't registered, so here I am! LOL
I have a Brazilian Raunbow Boa juvenile. We are looking to celebrate his first birthday next month (Oct. 22nd)
His name is Bean.
Well, actually it's: "Jelly Bean David Hisselhoff", but we just call him Bean
Hubby is David, kid is David, FIL is David... Why not the snake too?!
We know a lot about snakes here, but this is our first Brazilian Rainbow Boa.
One of my favorite sayings: "You learn something new everyday"...
So hello snake fans!!

Re: My intro...
Thanks Macandchz (great name!) & Ziggy. I will show off pics for sure!
So far I was able to find a very useful thread about snake lingo.
As a newbie, I will undoubtably ask some of the same questions you get over, and over, and over again.
Has anyone thought of a newbie post that says
"*Newbies start here*" and it's just a thread of hyperlinks to most asked questions, safety threads, etc?
Not to reinvent the wheel, just link to already established threads?
I don't want to step on any toes, just a friendly thought
*** And a question(!):
Is there a link to a post about shedding stages?
I.e.: I have read the term "in full blue" a lot.
Thanks for any help! (post number 3, teehee)

Re: My intro...
Here is a pic of Bean:
I have a lot more to show, and would like to keep a record of his progress while he grows. What is the best sub forum for his thread?

Re: My intro...
General boas sub forum is where he would go. Though with as many rainbows as we have been getting around here, they may need their own space soon lol.

I have yet to find this. Although I understand now what blue means, are there other "stages" ??
Or is it just in blue, then they shed?
Obviously I watch Bean go through his shedding process, but I was wondering if there is more to learn on this subject

I tend to be able to recognise when they're due to start the process, in blue is easy to recognise but sometimes if the snake is a shy one you don't always see them in blue, the the bit in between being in blue and actually shedding (some snakes take longer than others here) and then immediately post shed.
So those are the 4 stages I look at-pre, in blue, the bit between blue and shed (I'm sure it'll have a proper name) and post. There may be more, may be less but these work for me.
Pre blue I try and spot so I can start upping the humidity, blue and the bit between because I don't feed or handle during this bit and immediately post for all this nice bright photos (and more seriously because Auntie Rachel will refuse until a couple of days post shed).
This is where a log can really help. I just use a simple excel spreadsheet that notes all feeds, sheds, weights etc and it's easy to see at a glance when to expect an event like shedding.

Re: My intro...
Thanks Danny!
I have an app called "snake keeper" that I keep track of all meals, sheds and growth. It works great for me. And I can see trends easily. That's how I decided he wasn't growing fast enough, and realized we were under feeding him.
Bean doesn't seem to be affected during any phase of shed in handling or feeding (with the exception that he cannot see well), but I suspect things may change when he gets bigger and older. We shall see
